Lead Teacher
When you hear the word "robot," do you smile? Do you get excited when you can use your hands to build things? Do you find joy in building with kids?
Then this is the perfect job for you!
In this role, you will teach groups of children (K-8) basic engineering concepts and guide them in building their own robots. We will train you in all the unique skills, tools, and concepts needed for the position.
We are especially looking for creative people, DIY-lovers, great with kids, and deeply interested in learning more about STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math). Our teachers have backgrounds in various disciplines, including carpentry, education, visual and performing arts. We need people who can take a hot glue gun to Popsicle sticks and cardboard and create something that physically holds up and looks totally awesome - all while having a blast!
Responsibilities
- Teach robot-building classes
- Manage a classroom of K-8 kids for a robot-building session
- Have an encouraging demeanor, promoting confidence in kids
- Ensure the classes stay on time and within their agreed-upon time limit
- Troubleshoot robot issues (we will teach you how!)
- Stay positive and have fun under pressure!
- Quick thinking & improvisation in the classroom
- Coordinate with other teachers, clients, and parents on site
- Assist with cleaning and arranging classroom space
- Outside of Classes
- Learning how to build different projects
- Traveling to different locations to teach classes
- Assist with coordinating, managing, staffing, and executing events
- Assist with new teacher training, onboarding, shadowing, and culture-building
- Assist with sales and marketing of classes, programs, and other offerings
- Attend and lead staff meetings and professional development opportunities
- Keep robotics tools and wall systems organized and stocked
- Reporting feedback to the appropriate channels
Hours
25-30+ hours per week
Compensation
$20.00 - $25.00 per hour (depending on experience)
Requirements
- Enjoy working with children
- Love to make things with your hands (e.g woodworking, sculpture, crafts, set construction, baking, cooking, etc)
- Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills
- Patient and friendly
- Flexible
- Like having fun
- College experience required.
- Believe in diversifying the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) classroom
- Must be able to walk 1.5-2 miles per day
- Must be able to lift 35 pounds
- Must be able to pass a CPR/First Aid certification (we will arrange a certification class)
- Must be able to obtain PA Child Abuse and PA State Criminal Background clearances, FBI background (fingerprint) check and National Sex Offender Registry check
- Must be available to work weekends and school holidays
- Must have own transportation and be willing to travel across 62 zip codes with teacher cart and materials
Preferred Experience
- Teaching/leading a classroom
- Working with children in-person (teacher, camp counselor, babysitter, etc.)
- Working with circuits
- Crafting/making things 3-dimensionally
Location
Classes will take place off-site at locations in Philadelphia and surrounding neighborhoods in Chester County, Delaware County, Montgomery County, and Bucks County.
Schedule
This is a part-time role with hours ranging from 25 or more per week. The program calendar and student registrations will determine the precise schedule.
Training
All new teachers will undergo paid training and shadow senior teachers before starting. The exact schedule is TBD. Teachers must also attend a CPR training course or provide proof of certification within the last year.
