Communications Specialist (UW-Madison | School of Vet Medicine)

This position reports to the Communications Director at the UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine and is responsible for developing the school's print and digital publications, leading media and public relations efforts, and supporting the management of the school's websites. This position is a member of and works in collaboration with the school's advancement team. The individual will need to develop positive relationships with faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, and clients as well as partnerships with the public and other university partners in communications, media, and public relations.

Key job responsibilities:

  • Manages the day-to-day operational unit plans to align with strategic initiatives and to meet established objectives 5%
  • Plans, writes, and edits content for various internal and external stakeholders 40%
  • Plans and directs unit programs and/or projects to ensure adherence to deadlines and budgets 5%
  • Identifies, proposes, and implements new or revised unit operational policies and procedures 5%
  • Develops and executes public and media relations strategy and initiatives using various communication mediums that reflect the strategic priorities of the school and the advancement team. 15%
  • Develops, implements, and delivers communication materials through various mediums to designated audiences 25%
  • Supports the various needs of the communications team and communications director including photography/videography and digital media needs. 5%

Required Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years of professional full-time experience required, 7 years preferred, in developing and executing print and digital publications and website, media, and public relations strategies and materials.
  • Proficiency in word processing (MS Word), experience working with traditional and digital media, design and production of electronic newsletters, and demonstrated ability to learn new technology tools and platforms required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the veterinary medical and/or clinical and foundational science fields and/or higher education is strongly preferred, as is experience with print collateral and print publications.
  • Photography, photo editing and some basic graphic design experience is preferred.
