Public Health Receptionist / Dental Assistant (Full-Time) – Duluth, MN

Children’s Dental Services (CDS) is a dynamic, community-based nonprofit improving oral health for children and families with low incomes through accessible, culturally tailored care. Founded in 1919, CDS serves one of Minnesota’s most diverse communities and provides an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience in public health, healthcare administration, and community engagement.

 

Position Overview: The Public Health Receptionist / Dental Assistant serves as both the first point of contact for patients and an essential member of the clinical team. This position combines front desk responsibilities with chairside dental assisting duties to ensure patients receive exceptional care from check-in through treatment.

 

Key Responsibilities:

· Manage front desk operations in a fast-paced clinical setting—answering phones, greeting patients, scheduling and confirming appointments, and verifying insurance.

· Provide exceptional customer service to patients and families both in person and over the phone.

· Assist with basic administrative tasks and office organization.

· Work collaboratively with a diverse, mission-driven team.

· Assist in patient care, including preparing instruments and supporting procedures

· Record examinations and treatment in patient records

· Clean, sterilize, and maintain instruments and equipment in accordance with infection control standards

· Provide patient education regarding oral hygiene and care

· Maintain a clean, organized clinical environment

· Take patient radiographs, administer fluoride, sealants, and other duties within scope of practice

 

Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s degree—especially in Public Health, Health Sciences, Communications, or related fields.

· Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and communication/interpersonal skills.

· Competency in Microsoft Office Suite.

· Typing speed of 40 wpm minimum.

· Ability to multitask and stay calm in a fast-paced environment.

· Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and upholding HIPAA standards.

· Bilingual skills (Somali, Spanish, Karen, Ukrainian, French and English) highly valued.

· Knowledge of medical assistance programs a plus.

 

Compensation & Benefits:

Unlicensed: $20–$23/hour, depending on qualifications.

Licensed: $28–$30/hour + DOQ

· Licensed Dental Assistant preferred; training provided for qualified candidates

· Full-time (40 hours/week) with comprehensive benefits.

· Opportunity to gain hands-on experience in community health, healthcare systems, and nonprofit operations.

· Completion of an accredited dental assisting program a plus
