Teacher Assistant – Special Education

An ESS Teacher Assistant – Special Education supports certificated teaching staff in delivering instructional and behavioral services to students with a wide range of complex communicative, developmental, or physical disabilities. 

This role plays a vital part in creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment by assisting with classroom instruction, student supervision, and daily living activities. The Teacher Assistant helps promote student independence, reinforces learning objectives, and ensures that each student receives individualized support to succeed academically, socially, and physically.

 

Responsibilities

  • Assist teachers with instruction, supervision, and support of students with complex special needs in classroom and school settings
  • Position and assist students with mobility devices and adaptive equipment as needed
  • Provide personal care support including toileting, hygiene, and feeding (including use of

specialized equipment) after appropriate training is complete

  • Assist with meal and snack preparation and ensure safe feeding practices
  • Observe and monitor student behavior; identify concerns and support behavior intervention strategies
  • Provide individualized and small-group assistance with assignments, activities, and skill development
  • Prepare instructional materials and support implementation of lesson plans
  • Administer and score tests and assist in evaluating student progress and performance
  • Support students during physical education and other structured activities
  • Assist students safely during arrival, departure, and transitions throughout the school day
  • Apply approved physical intervention techniques when necessary and when properly trained
  • Maintain safe, clean, and organized classroom and playground environments
  • Assist with tracking and inventory of classroom materials and supplies
  • Support communication with parents/guardians as directed by teaching staff
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all students, family, and staff information

 

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • State/FBI Criminal History Clearance
