The Braille Instructor is responsible for providing comprehensive pre- and post-skills assessments, one-on-one and group classroom and distance learning instruction, and specialized equipment recommendations for students who are blind or visually impaired. These services are provided to individuals in both residential and outreach settings across the state of Alabama. This position requires a passion for working with students, staff, parents, and community partners. The instructor will actively participate in the development and implementation of Individualized Educational instruction to meet each student's unique needs. You will document student progress and performance in a timely and accurate manner. Effective communication with students, staff, and partner organizations is a vital part of this position, requiring strong writing, speaking, and public relations skills to foster a collaborative and supportive learning environment.

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Basic Qualifications

  • Education & Experience: Must have obtained a Bachelor’s degree, OR have at least one (1) year of experience teaching Braille. 
  • Braille Competency: Must demonstrate competency in Braille by scoring 90% on the AIDB Braille Skills Assessment upon offer of employment. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Teaching Experience: Three (3) years of professional experience teaching braille. 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Student Instruction & Training

  • Core Curricula: Provide one-on-one and group classroom and distance learning instruction for students who are blind or visually impaired. 
  • Technical Literacy: Demonstrate proficiency in literary Braille and Nemeth Code. Maintain essential familiarity with writing Braille using a Slate and Stylus. 
  • Assessments & Equipment: Provide comprehensive pre- and post-skills assessments and supply specialized equipment recommendations. 
  • Curriculum Development: Create, review, and update instructional materials and processes for both classroom-based and distance learning platforms. 

Administration & Observation

  • Progress Tracking: Document student progress and performance in a timely and accurate manner. 
  • Staffing & Team Meetings: Actively participate in student staffing and team meetings to contribute to the development of student goals and strategies. 
  • Classroom Supervision: Supervise and work cooperatively with teacher aides and interns assigned to the classroom to ensure a cohesive instructional team.  
  • Inventory Control: Maintain adequate AIDB inventory of equipment, ensuring all materials are properly maintained and serviceable for student use. 

Outreach & Development

  • Public Relations: Foster a collaborative and supportive learning environment through effective communication and public relations with partner organizations, staff, and parents. 

Professional Development and Certifications

  • National Braille Certification: Must obtain Library of Congress National Library Service in Unified English Braille Transcriber Certification OR obtain National Certification in Unified English Braille (NCUEB) within the first thirty-six (36) months of hire. 
  • Core AIDB Training: Complete AIDB online training on Deafness, Blindness, Visual Impairments, DeafBlindness, and Multiple Disabilities within twelve (12) months of hire. 
  • Methodology Growth: Stay abreast of current research and teaching strategies in the field of blindness and low vision education.

SALARY:

Scale MR Rank 4A (High School Diploma) $36,297.00 - $53,505.00

Scale MR Rank 4B (Bachelor's Degree) $41,391 - $62,775.30

Scale MR Rank 4M (Master's Degree) $43,353.45- $65,704.80

230 Days Staff

 

Direct deposit is required.
