Research Protections Assistant
Research Protections Assistant (RPA) Position:
Research Protections (RP) is a unit within the Office of Research responsible for managing a variety of UCI’s research compliance programs. The RP staff provides administrative support to UCI's four Institutional Review Boards (IRB), the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and the Human Stem Cell Review Committee (hSCRO).
Human Research Protections (HRP) within the Office of Research is responsible for ensuring the ethical and equitable treatment of all human research subjects in studies conducted by UCI faculty, staff, and students. It is also responsible for ensuring compliance with federal regulations, state laws and University polices, as well as national standards for research involving human participants. Within HRP, Education and Quality Improvement Program (EQUIP) monitors and measures the effectiveness, efficiency, and quality of UCI’s human research protection program.
The UCI Human Stem Cell Research Oversight Committee (hSCRO) provides oversight for UCI and UCSB research that involves the use of human pluripotent stem cells. The UCI Human Stem Cell Research Oversight (hSCRO) Committee assures that human stem cell activities are in accordance with California state regulations and UCI policies and procedures.
Summary of Job Duties and Responsibilities:
The position offered is 100% remote. This is a work study position for freshman to junior year UCI students. The Research Protections Assistant will need to provide the department with:
- Copy of accepted Work Study Award
- Copy of resume with 1-2 work related references
The RP Assistant (RPA) will work directly with the RP staff:
- Provide administrative, technical and professional support to the UCI Human Research Protections Program (HRPP) for the Education and Quality Improvement Program (EQUIP).
- Process transactions (Self-Determinations, Renewals, Close Requests, Modifications, etc.)
- EQUIP / hSCRO related tasks may include work on ineligible Principal Investigators, closing non-responses/study expirations Quality Assurance (QA), assist with QA of self-determinations of Non-Human Subject Research and Exempt Research and Iron Mountain archiving among other tasks.
- Provide administrative support to other teams, and perform other duties, including special projects as assigned.
Required skills:
The ideal candidate has the following skills:
- Excellent attention to detail, combined with strong verbal / written communication skills
- Work with Windows on PC, knows Excel, Word, Adobe, Outlook
- Ability to learn new programs specific to the department (Kuali Research Protocols; Huron; WIKI)
- Work independently with little interaction and collaborate effectively with team members when necessary.
- Complete tasks with little supervision
- Has basic knowledge of / interest in Research Protections
- Adhere to their work schedule and can work during work hours (M-F 8-5:00pm) – No night or weekend hours available, no work during UCI Staff Holidays.
Required tools:
A personal (not public) working computer with UCI VPN downloaded to allow adequate security while working remotely from a private (not public) location.
