Position Title: Human Resources and Development Associate/Manager 

Reports To: Chief Operating Officer 

Employment Type: Full-time, 40 hours/week 

Minimum Experience: Entry-Level OR Managerial 

Location: Santa Barbara, CA 

 

We are hiring for one position and welcoming candidates at two levels—Associate or Manager—depending on experience.

General Function: 

The Human Resources and Development Associate/Manager works across departments to keep SBRM working effectively to serve its clients and fulfill its mission. They are a key member of the administrative team, working with all areas of nonprofit functions but focusing on: human resources, development, grant writing, volunteer management, and coordination of the Board of Directors. 

 

Requirements Based on Level: 

Associate (Entry Level) 

  • 1+ year of administrative or nonprofit experience, OR a Bachelor’s Degree 
  • Works with guidance and grows into increasing independence 
  • Communicates clearly in writing and in person, and reads the room, shifting register to match who they're speaking with 
  • Holds a professional, credible presence with senior staff, board members, and key external partners from day one 
  • Willingness and eagerness to learn valued as much as prior experience 
  • Compensation: $24.00–$26.00 per hour DOE 

  

Manager (Experienced Level) 

  • All requirements of the Associate listed above 
  • 3+ years of HR experience; Non-profit development experience is a plus 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage HR compliance, payroll, and benefits administration independently 
  • Handles sensitive and high-stakes conversations—pay, performance reviews, discipline, and separations—directly and with sound judgment 
  • Experience writing and managing foundation grants or comparable deadline-driven writing experience  
  • Comfortable leading cross-functional projects and working directly with executive leadership 
  • Compensation: $63,000 - $85,000 per year

 

General Position Requirements

  • Availability for occasional evenings and weekends (approximately 4 evenings and 1 Saturday per year) 

  

Principal Activities: 

Associate-level hires perform these functions with guidance and grow into independent ownership; Manager-level hires own them independently. 

 

Human Resource Management 

  • Manage payroll, salary administration, and deductions 
  • Manage employee benefits, including healthcare and retirement accounts 
  • Prepare job descriptions, new hire documentation and orientation, and process terminations 
  • Assist staff and supervisors with corrective action, performance reviews, and other job evaluations 
  • Maintain personnel files, ensure all certifications are current, and perform file audits 
  • Ensure all required human resource functions are in compliance with state and federal employment laws and regulations 
  • Maintain and evaluate all personnel and organization insurance policies including Worker’s Compensation, General Liability Insurance Policies, and health insurance 

  

Foundation Grant Writing 

  • Collaborate with the President in writing and submitting grants and funding requests 
  • Manage the annual foundation grant calendar and ensure grants and reports are submitted on time 
  • Communicate effectively with foundation personnel about funding requests 
  • Seek out new grant opportunities through research, networking, and other means 

  

Development Administration 

  • Provide backup gift processing during busy seasons 
  • Ensure proper procedures are in place to protect donor confidentiality 
  • Communicate with constituents regarding gifts 
  • Assist with proper entry and receipting of all In-Kind donations 
  • Assist key Associates with relevant gift and finance situations as they arise 
  • Provide occasional event and mailing support 

  

Board Liaison 

  • Coordinate and staff Board and committee meetings 
  • Maintain calendars of work, communicating and coordinating activity as necessary 
  • Produce meeting packets and minutes 
  • Ensure motions, minutes, and handouts are recorded and stored properly 
  • Staff Program & Personnel Committee and Development Committee meetings 

  

Volunteer Management 

  • Oversee volunteer correspondence and inquiries about volunteer opportunities and connect them to pertinent program staff 
  • Work with SBRM staff to identify volunteer needs and recruitment/training of volunteers 
  • Keep accurate volunteer records 
  • Serve as the knowledgeable staff member regarding volunteer opportunities, concerns, and planning 

  

General Administrative Support 

  • Provide support for other administrative projects as the need arises 
  • Coordinate and staff cross-functional meetings and events including board, committees, strategic planning, holiday events, among others.
