Part-Time Preschool Assistant (Break Coverage & After-Care Support)
Position Title: Preschool Assistant – Break Coverage & After-Care Program
Schedule: Part-Time, 12–15 hours per week
Reports To: Preschool Director and Lead Teachers
Position Summary
We are seeking a caring, dependable, and energetic Preschool Assistant to support our teaching team by providing classroom coverage during teacher breaks and assisting with our after-care program. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with young children, values teamwork, and can create a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment for preschool-aged children.
As a Reggio Emilia-inspired preschool, we believe children are capable, competent, and curious learners. Our program values child-led exploration, relationships, creativity, and the environment as the "third teacher." The Preschool Assistant will support these principles by fostering meaningful interactions, encouraging children's ideas and independence, and helping create an environment that inspires wonder and discovery.
Responsibilities
Classroom Break Coverage
- Supervise and engage children while lead teachers are on scheduled breaks.
- Follow established classroom routines, schedules, and behavior expectations.
- Support child-led learning experiences and encourage curiosity and exploration.
- Assist with activities such as open-ended play, art experiences, storytelling, and outdoor exploration.
- Observe and listen to children, responding thoughtfully to their interests and needs.
- Ensure children's safety and well-being at all times.
- Communicate effectively with teachers regarding classroom activities and any concerns.
After-Care Program Support
- Provide a warm, welcoming, and engaging after-care environment.
- Facilitate open-ended activities, games, creative projects, and outdoor play opportunities.
- Encourage collaboration, problem-solving, and positive social interactions among children.
- Supervise snack time and assist with clean-up routines.
- Support children in developing independence and self-help skills.
- Assist with parent pick-up procedures and maintain a safe dismissal process.
General Duties
- Maintain a clean, organized, and inviting learning environment.
- Respect and care for classroom materials and thoughtfully prepared spaces.
- Follow all licensing regulations and school policies.
- Build positive, respectful relationships with children, families, and colleagues.
- Participate in professional development and training as requested.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Preschool Director.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Experience working with preschool-aged children preferred.
- Understanding of, or interest in learning about, the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education.
- CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Reliable, punctual, and flexible.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, bend, sit on the floor, and actively engage with young children.
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to supervise children indoors and outdoors.

Compensation
- Hourly rate: $20 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.
Schedule
- Part-Time: 12–15 hours per week.
- Primarily responsible for covering teacher breaks and supporting afternoon after-care hours, with flexibility based on program needs.
