Library Clerk
*Schedule includes morning and evening shifts, as well as weekend hours including Sundays. Averages 20 hours per week.* *Applicants must be able to see, grasp, stand, walk, perform repetitive motions, stoop, push, pull, and lift.* Description: Shelves and maintains library materials. Greets and assists customers in the stacks, refers customers to other internal departments and may provide guidance and basic instruction regarding using the online catalog, downloading materials, accessing databases, and other services. Utilizes databases, bibliographies, and other resources to recommend specific books and materials that the customer requests. Inspects and performs maintenance of materials. Promotes all services and programs of the library. Maintains the library’s collections. Organizes and shelves books, audio-visual materials, magazines and other material types. Shifts and arranges materials systematically.
· Greets and assists customers explaining the Dewey Decimal System and guiding customers in identifying and accessing materials. Explains library facility layout and location of collections. Provides general guidance and instruction regarding library resources and services. Responds to customer inquiries concerning subject and author requests. Is able to explain formats and resources. Assists or refers customers to internal departments in usage of library technology, such as the library catalog, databases, eReaders, and copiers/scanners. Teaches customers to access and utilize the online catalog.
· Maintains the library’s collections by assessing general physical condition. Sorts and organizes materials to prepare for shelving. Assesses collections’ order and potential space limitations and shifts materials as needed. Empties book drop as assigned and checks in materials. Assesses physical quality of materials and may perform general book repair. Sorts items for shelving and routing.
· Provides general customer service concerning accounts. Explains policies and procedures regarding holds, overdue books, and fines and fees in general terms. Occasionally performs circulation duties as needed, including checking materials in and out.
· Promotes library services and programs. Refers customers to programs and print and online calendars and schedules. Discerns patron interests and needs and is able to guide them to materials, programs, and services that meet their expectations.
· Locates specific titles from reports and resolves issues. Assists in opening and closing procedures. May change outdoor signage. Assists in general housekeeping and straightening of public areas both inside and out. Assists with set up and break down of meeting rooms and programs.
Minimum Education - High school diploma or equivalent.
Minimum Qualification - At least one year of experience in a library or customer service environment. Must have a Valid SC Driver's License.
