Position Description

The Biology Laboratory EDGE Intern supports the daily operations of biology teaching laboratories and assists with departmental animal colony and greenhouse activities as needed within the Department of Natural Sciences. This position provides hands-on experience in laboratory preparation, instructional support, inventory management, animal care procedures, and departmental organization.

Through this experience, interns contribute to the success of biology instruction while developing professional skills in organization, scientific workplace practices, attention to detail, responsibility, teamwork, and operational support within an academic laboratory environment.

Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Operations & Department Support

  • Prepare, organize, and maintain laboratory materials, equipment, specimens, and instructional resources to support biology courses and laboratory activities.
  • Maintain inventory records and assist with organizing laboratory supplies and departmental resources.
  • Support faculty with grading, instructional preparation, and laboratory-related projects.
  • Assist with the care of departmental animal colonies following established procedures.
  • Water and monitor greenhouse plants to support instructional activities.

Qualifications

  • Biology majors preferred; chemistry, biochemistry, and environmental studies majors will also be considered.
  • Sophomore, junior, or senior standing preferred.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

  • Lifting and carrying laboratory materials and supplies.


Supervision, Mentorship & Evaluation

EDGE Interns receive ongoing coaching, mentorship, and feedback throughout the academic year. Supervisors provide guidance on workplace expectations, professional development, and operational responsibilities.


As part of the Converse EDGE Internship Program, interns participate in a structured assessment process designed to measure growth in career readiness competencies and professional development.

Position Details

  • Duration: Fall 2026 and Spring 2027
  • Pay Rate: $12.00 per hour
  • Schedule: Determined in coordination with the supervisor
  • Positions will remain open until filled. Hiring timelines vary by department, and some supervisors may move more quickly through the interview and selection process than others. Early application is encouraged.
