Digital and Social Media Intern

The Virginia Tech Student Affairs Communications team, a department that provides communications and marketing services to Student Affairs at Virginia Tech, is looking for a digital and social media intern for Fall 2026 – Spring 2027.
The Marketing and Communications Manager will share and review learning objectives with the social media intern throughout the internship, which is part of the Virginia Tech Campus internEXP Program. Following the internship, the student should have intermediate skills to create quality content that adheres to brand guidelines, have a basic understanding of photography/videography, and be familiar with digital media assets such as podcasts, reels, etc. Following the internship, the student should have intermediate experience with video and photo editing.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The digital and social media intern will report directly to the Marketing and Communications Manager to carry out the following responsibilities:
Assist with photo and video assignments, including post editing, with guidance from the visual media manager.
Under the guidance of the digital media team lead intern, assist in the creation and planning of trending and/or educational content for the Virginia Tech Student Affairs social media channels, primarily video content for the platform Instagram.
Collaborate with VTSA partners and students as needed for digital media products such as the Student Affairs Bird Brains podcast or Instagram reels.
Attend relevant meetings with the Communication team as needed; Adhere to Virginia Tech brand guidelines.
Requirements:
Communications, English, or Marketing major preferred
Basic knowledge of social media platforms, current trends, and basic video editing skills.
Intermediate knowledge of digital etiquette and understanding of comment moderation.
Basic experience with photography of social or business events, or in a similar capacity.
Must be willing to commute to the Corporate Research Center during the week for shifts and willing to attend some Virginia Tech events outside of normal office hours.
Must be willing to interview students at on-campus events for reels or podcast episodes. (Ex., Gobblerfest, The Big Event, Run in Remembrance, etc.)
Must be available to attend occasional evening or weekend Virginia Tech Student Affairs
Hours and Pay:
This is a paid, in-person internship with a flexible work schedule (10 hours per week). Participation in Campus internEXP is required and includes enrollment in a 0-credit asynchronous experiential learning course. If you are interested in receiving academic credit for your experience, please reach out to your academic department. The pay for this position is $13 per hour. Located in the Corporate Research Center (1750 Kraft Drive, Blacksburg, VA). The Corporate Research Center (CRC) is located less than five minutes from campus and includes free parking for employees. The dress code is business casual/casual and varies based on in-office days or working events. Student employees attending Virginia Tech events to gather content for work will work with their supervisor to flex their in-office hours to maintain the 10 hours/week schedule.
