The Northern District of California is one of the largest U.S. Attorney's Offices in the country with 143 attorneys located in the three-staffed offices: San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose. The Office prosecutes federal crimes, defends, and pursues the interest of the United States in civil cases. The office is responsible for representing the federal government in virtually all litigation involving violations of federal law, civil lawsuits against the government, and actions to collect judgments and restitution of behalf of victims and taxpayers.

The district stretches from the Monterey Coast to California's northern border with Oregon, and from the Pacific Ocean nearly to Sacramento in the East. Nearly 9 million people live, work, and raise their families in the Northern District of California. The District's main office is in San Francisco with branch offices in Oakland and San Jose, CA.

At the full performance level, you will support Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSA) in the Civil Division by providing a variety of legal assistance and office support services. If selected, you will receive formal and/or on-the-job training as needed. Duties include:

  • examining, preparing and processing technical legal documents, e.g., complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, subpoenas, and libels;
  • proofreading and cite checking legal briefs, memoranda, and other legal documents;
  • providing assistance to attorneys in trial preparation by conducting research of litigation, statutes, regulations and court cases;
  • assembling exhibits, affidavits, and other legal documents;
  • assembling and organizing files and records material for disposition or transfer to records depository;
  • maintaining calendar of assigned active cases;
  • tracking filing, hearing, and trials dates, and scheduling conference and interviews;
  • arranging travel by preparing itinerary and securing transportation and hotel reservations;
  • producing written documents and materials using office software applications.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

This is a great entry-level position for those who are interested in exploring the legal field. Our targeted audience are those who have recently graduated with a 4-year degree.

Each grade has 10 step rates and new federal employees are usually hired at step one of the applicable GS grade level at which the applicant qualified. The salary range for a GS-05 in San Francisco, California is $50,925.00- $66,203.00 (step 1 through step 10). The salary range for a GS-06 in San Francisco, California is $56,767.00 - $73,796.00 (step 1 through step 10). The salary range for a GS-07 in San Francisco, California is $63,081.00 - $82,007.00 (step 1 through step 10).
