AmeriCorps National Service Volunteer - Bike Educator

Are you ready to spend a meaningful year making a real difference in the lives of children across the Richmond region? Greater Richmond Fit4Kids is looking for passionate, community-minded individuals to join our AmeriCorps team for a rewarding year of service focused on youth development, education, public health, and active transportation.

As an AmeriCorps Bike Educator, you will serve with Fit4Kids to promote physical activity, bicycle safety, and healthy lifestyles among elementary school students throughout Richmond. In this role, you will help children learn to ride a bicycle, develop safe riding habits, and build confidence as cyclists and pedestrians. Through direct instruction and mentorship, you'll empower youth with lifelong skills while helping create safer, healthier communities.

Service Term Details

  • Service Term: September 1, 2026 – June 15, 2027
  • AmeriCorps Slot Type: Half-Time
  • Total Service Hours: 900
  • Average Weekly Commitment: Approximately 30 hours per week

Key Responsibilities
Teach bicycle riding and safety skills through Fit4Kids' Learn to Ride program

  • Lead engaging lessons that promote safe biking, pedestrian safety, and active transportation
  • Support elementary school students in developing confidence, independence, and healthy habits
  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor for youth
  • Assist with community events, outreach activities, and program implementation
  • Collect and maintain program participation data as required by AmeriCorps and Fit4Kids
  • Participate in AmeriCorps trainings, service projects, and professional development opportunities

Required Qualifications

  • Passion for working with children and supporting youth development
  • Interest in education, public health, active transportation, or community engagement
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Comfortable working outdoors and being physically active throughout the day
  • Reliable transportation to service sites throughout the Richmond region
  • Must meet all AmeriCorps eligibility requirements
  • No prior teaching experience required; training provided

Living Allowance & Benefits

  • Living Allowance: $12,375 total (equivalent to approximately $13.75 per hour over the service term)
  • Retention Bonus: $500 upon successful completion of the service term
  • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award: $3,697.50 upon successful completion of service, which can be used toward qualified student loans or future educational expenses
  • Student Loan Forbearance: Available for eligible federal student loans during service
  • Mileage Reimbursement: Approved service-related travel is reimbursed at $0.60 per mile
  • Paid Winter Break: Fit4Kids offices are closed from December 21, 2026 through January 3, 2027. Members continue receiving their living allowance during this period and are not required to serve.
  • Professional development training in youth development, education, public health, leadership, and community engagement
  • Networking opportunities with educators, nonprofit leaders, public health professionals, and community partners
  • Hands-on experience in education, youth programming, public health, and nonprofit management
  • Membership in a nationally recognized service program dedicated to strengthening communities
