Engineering Intern (Summer & Fall)

Location: Bedford Heights, OH

Position Summary

FEMC is seeking motivated Engineering Interns to support the design, manufacturing, and assembly of custom automation and packaging machinery. This position provides hands-on experience in mechanical design, technical documentation, CNC manufacturing, machine assembly, and continuous improvement projects.

Interns will work directly with experienced engineers and technicians on real customer projects, gaining exposure to every stage of the machine-building process.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engineering & Design
  • Create and revise 3D models and 2D drawings using SolidWorks.
  • Generate manufacturing drawings and bills of materials (BOMs).
  • Assist with machine design updates and engineering change requests.
  • Support standardization and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Technical Documentation
  • Develop and update machinery manuals.
  • Create assembly instructions, setup guides, and troubleshooting documentation.
  • Capture photos and videos for customer and internal documentation.
  • Assist with technical writing for machine operation and maintenance procedures.
  • Manufacturing & CNC Support
  • Operate CNC machining equipment under supervision.
  • Assist with CNC programming and toolpath generation.
  • Support fixture design and manufacturing process improvements.
  • Verify machined components against engineering drawings.
  • Assembly & Testing
  • Assist with machinery assembly and integration.
  • Support machinery testing, troubleshooting, and validation.
  • Participate in Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) activities.
  • Help document machine performance and test results.
  • General Engineering Support
  • Participate in engineering meetings and project reviews.
  • Assist with inventory, material organization, and shop support activities.
  • Perform data collection and analysis for engineering projects.
  • Support cross-functional teams including engineering, production, sales, and service.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with CAD software (SolidWorks preferred).
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Comfortable working in both office and shop environments.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with CNC machining or programming.
  • Experience with fabrication, assembly, or hands-on mechanical work.
  • Familiarity with automation, controls, or manufacturing processes.
  • Interest in machine design and custom machinery development.
