Dental Hygienist
POSITION SUMMARY
The Dental Hygienist, under the direction of the Director of Dental Services and supervising Dentist, provides high-quality preventive and therapeutic dental care to patients in accordance with established clinical protocols and accepted standards of care. This role supports the overall Dental Program by delivering patient-centered care, promoting oral health education, and contributing to operational efficiency and financial sustainability. The Dental Hygienist is expected to maintain flexibility in supporting multiple clinic locations as needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Included but not limited to the following)
Clinical Patient Care
- Performs patient assessments including medical history review, dental charting, periodontal charting, and vital signs as indicated.
- Delivers direct patient care including prophylaxis, scaling and root planing, polishing, sealants, fluoride treatments, and radiographs.
- Develops and implements individualized dental hygiene care plans under supervision of the Dentist.
- Documents all clinical findings, treatments, and patient interactions accurately in the electronic health record.
- Provides patient education on oral hygiene, disease prevention, and post-treatment care.
- Identifies and reports abnormalities or patient concerns to the Dentist for further evaluation.
- Assists in emergency procedures and patient stabilization when necessary.
Clinical Operations & Support
- Prepares and maintains dental operatories, instruments, and equipment in accordance with infection control standards.
- Ensures proper sterilization and maintenance of dental instruments and equipment.
- Assists the Dentist chairside during complex procedures when needed.
- Takes impressions for study models and other diagnostic purposes.
- Utilizes downtime to restock supplies and prepare for upcoming patient appointments.
Patient Flow & Administrative Support
- Assists with patient intake, triage, and scheduling coordination as needed.
- Supports front office functions including patient reception, answering phones, and managing patient flow.
- Initiates care for walk-in patients as appropriate.
Quality, Compliance & Program Support
- Participates in quality improvement initiatives and compliance with HRSA, OSHA, CDC, and ADA standards.
- Supports achievement of dental program productivity and financial goals.
- Contributes to process improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and operational efficiency.
- Maintains compliance with infection control protocols and safety standards.
- Performs other duties as assigned by leadership.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- None
RELATIONSHIP WITH THE DIRECTOR OF DENTAL SERVICES
- Provides timely and accurate clinical data and patient information.
- Supports implementation of clinical protocols and operational workflows.
- Participates in team meetings and contributes to program development.

QUALIFICATIONS
The Dental Hygienist position requires strong clinical knowledge and the ability to operate effectively within a community health setting. Core competencies include:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Dental Hygiene from an accredited program
- Current Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) license in the State of South Carolina
- Minimum of two (2) years of clinical experience preferred
- Current CPR/BLS certification
- Proficiency in written and verbal communication
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA
- Knowledge of dental terminology, procedures, and diagnostic techniques
- Experience with electronic dental/medical record systems preferred
- Ability to interpret clinical instructions and protocols
