CAMP HEALTH DIRECTOR

⚕  This is a mandated position under New Jersey Youth Camp Safety Standards (N.J.A.C. 8:25). The Camp Health Director must be on-site and on duty for the full duration of all summer program sessions.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Camp Health Director is a state-mandated position required by the New Jersey Department of Health under the Youth Camp Safety Standards (N.J.A.C. 8:25) for all licensed summer youth camp and after-school programs operating during summer break. This position is not optional every licensed SRTM summer program site must have a qualified Health Director on-site and on duty for the full duration of each program day.


 

The Camp Health Director is responsible for the health, safety, and medical well-being of all enrolled students and staff during summer program operations. This individual serves as the first responder for all health-related incidents, maintains all required health documentation, administers medications as needed, and ensures the site meets all NJ Office of Licensing health and safety compliance standards throughout the summer season.


 

This role is ideal for a licensed or certified healthcare professional — such as a registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, EMT, physician's assistant, or nurse practitioner who is passionate about working with children and wants to make a meaningful contribution to a mission-driven summer program.


 

NJ STATE-MANDATED QUALIFICATIONS (N.J.A.C. 8:25)

Per the New Jersey Youth Camp Safety Standards, the Camp Health Director at a day camp must meet ALL of the following state requirements. These are non-negotiable minimum qualifications candidates who do not meet these requirements cannot be considered for this position.


 

MANDATORY STATE REQUIREMENTS — N.J.A.C. 8:25

  • Must be an adult (18 years of age or older)
  • Must remain on-site and on duty for the entire duration of the Youth Camp program each day
  • Must hold current certification in Professional CPR from a Recognized Certification Agency (e.g., American Red Cross, American Heart Association)
  • Must hold current Standard Level First Aid certification from a Recognized Certification Agency

Note: Certifications must be current and valid for the full duration of the summer program season.


 

Preferred Professional Credentials (Highly Competitive Candidates)

While the state minimum requires CPR and First Aid certification, SRTM strongly prefers candidates who hold one of the following professional licenses or credentials, consistent with higher-level NJ camp health standards and best practices for youth programs:

  • Registered Nurse (RN) — licensed by the NJ State Board of Nursing
  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) — licensed by the NJ State Board of Nursing
  • Nurse Practitioner (NP) — licensed and certified in the state of New Jersey
  • Physician's Assistant (PA) — licensed by the NJ State Board of Medical Examiners
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) — certified by the NJ Office of Emergency Medical Services
  • Physician (MD or DO) — licensed by the NJ State Board of Medical Examiners
  • Paramedic — certified and in good standing with NJ OEMS


 

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

1.  On-Site Health Oversight

  • Be present, on duty, and accessible at the SRTM summer program site for the full duration of each program day — no exceptions
  • Serve as the primary health authority on site; all health-related decisions during program hours go through the Health Director
  • Conduct a daily health inspection of the program site to identify and address any environmental health or safety hazards
  • Monitor student and staff health throughout the day, identifying signs of illness, injury, or distress
  • Establish and maintain a designated, clearly identified health area or health station at the site

2.  First Aid & Emergency Response

  • Provide immediate first aid and emergency medical response to students and staff as needed
  • Assess injuries and illnesses, administer appropriate first aid, and determine when emergency services (911) should be contacted
  • Contact parents/guardians promptly when a student requires medical attention beyond basic first aid
  • Coordinate with emergency responders during any medical emergency and accompany a student to emergency care when required
  • Lead or participate in site emergency drills as required under NJ licensing standards

3.  Medication Administration

  • Administer medications to students as authorized by written parental consent and physician orders, in accordance with NJ law and SRTM policy
  • Maintain a secure, organized medication log documenting all medications administered, times, dosages, and student names
  • Ensure all medications are stored securely, labeled correctly, and at appropriate temperatures
  • Follow NJ Youth Camp Safety Standards regarding medication administration policies, including proper forms and documentation
  • Communicate medication-related concerns with parents, staff, and the Assistant Director as appropriate

4.  Health Records & Documentation

  • Review and maintain all camper health records including health history forms, physician notes, and allergy alerts on file for every enrolled student
  • Ensure all required health documentation is collected, complete, and current before the summer program begins
  • Maintain an accurate, up-to-date health log documenting all incidents, treatments, and follow-up actions taken during the program
  • Complete all NJ Department of Health required health-related reporting during the program season
  • Report any communicable disease or reportable condition to the NJ Department of Health as required by law

5.  Compliance with NJ Youth Camp Safety Standards

  • Ensure the site's health practices are fully compliant with all requirements under N.J.A.C. 8:25 for the duration of the summer program
  • Maintain all required certifications and documentation as mandated by the NJ Department of Health
  • Be prepared for and fully cooperate with any scheduled or unannounced NJ DOH health inspections
  • Review and stay current on any updates to NJ Youth Camp Safety Standards that affect health and medical requirements
  • Immediately report any health-related compliance concerns to the Assistant Director of Program Operations

6.  Health Education & Illness Prevention

  • Promote a healthy, hygienic environment by supporting good handwashing practices, food safety, and cleanliness standards across the site
  • Provide basic health education and guidance to staff on recognizing signs of heat illness, allergic reactions, and other common summertime health concerns
  • Monitor and respond to environmental health conditions including heat index, outdoor air quality, and sun safety
  • Communicate proactively with parents and families about health concerns, illness policies, and medication requirements before and during the program

7.  Communication & Coordination

  • Maintain open, professional communication with the Assistant Director, Site Manager, and Site Director on all health-related matters
  • Participate in pre-season staff orientations to train program staff on health and safety protocols, emergency procedures, and reporting requirements
  • Provide timely written incident reports for any health event requiring medical attention or parent notification
  • Submit health-related documentation and reports to the Assistant Director as required throughout the summer season

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check and NJ State Central Registry (SCR) clearance prior to the start of the program
  • Must complete all SRTM and NJ DOH required pre-season health and safety trainings before the first day of summer program
  • Must provide copies of all required certifications and professional licenses to SRTM Administration before the program begins — no exceptions
  • Must be physically able to respond to emergencies, including kneeling, lifting, and performing CPR
  • Must maintain confidentiality of all student health information in accordance with applicable privacy laws
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a strong plus for communicating with families

  • The SRTM summer program passes all NJ Department of Health inspections with zero health-related violations
  • Every health incident is responded to promptly, documented accurately, and communicated appropriately to parents and leadership
  • All camper health records are complete, current, and organized before the first day of summer programming
  • Medications are administered safely, logged correctly, and stored securely throughout the season
  • Staff feel informed and confident in health and safety protocols because the Health Director has trained and supported them well
  • Parents trust that their children are in a safe, healthy environment — concerns are addressed promptly and professionally
