Are you passionate about community development, land use planning, and helping shape the future of one of Indiana's fastest-growing regions? Allen County Department of Planning Services is seeking an Associate Land Use Planner to play a key role in guiding residential, commercial, and industrial development throughout Allen County and the City of Fort Wayne.

In this position, you will work directly with developers, elected officials, engineers, architects, and community stakeholders to evaluate development proposals, prepare recommendations, and help ensure responsible growth that enhances the quality of life for residents. From reviewing subdivision plats and rezonings to presenting projects at public meetings, you will have a direct impact on how our communities grow and evolve.

This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career planning professional looking to gain valuable experience in land use planning, zoning administration, development review, GIS analysis, and public engagement while working on a diverse range of projects throughout Allen County.

What You'll Do

  • Review residential, commercial, and industrial development proposals for compliance with local ordinances and development standards.
  • Assist property owners, developers, engineers, architects, and attorneys through the development review process.
  • Conduct site visits and evaluate development proposals in the field.
  • Prepare professional staff reports, recommendations, findings of fact, and conditions of approval for Plan Commission consideration.
  • Present projects and planning recommendations at public hearings and meetings before the Allen County and Fort Wayne Plan Commissions.
  • Review subdivision plats, development plans, rezoning requests, covenant amendments, and vacation petitions.
  • Analyze GIS and development data to support planning initiatives and decision-making.
  • Coordinate development projects through the county's online permitting system.
  • Review and issue Certificates of Compliance and sign permits.
  • Assist with subdivision administration, addressing, code compliance, and development-related inspections.
  • Collaborate with planners, engineers, elected officials, and community stakeholders to support responsible growth and development.

 

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Planning, Urban Planning, Public Administration, Community Development, Geography, or a related field.
  • One year of experience in planning, community development, GIS, zoning administration, or a related field.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including public presentations and customer service.
  • Ability to interpret ordinances, regulations, maps, plans, and technical documents.
  • Experience with or willingness to learn GIS software, permitting systems, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
