Assistant Project Manager Intern

Job Description

The Assistant Project Manager Intern is responsible for supporting the Project Managers and Field Operations team in the planning, coordination, documentation, and execution of commercial construction projects. This internship provides hands-on exposure to all phases of construction, including tenant improvements, renovations, and ground-up construction projects.

Under the supervision of a Project Manager, the Assistant Project Manager Intern will assist with project documentation, scheduling, subcontractor coordination, estimating support, procurement activities, safety compliance, and project tracking. This position offers an opportunity to learn construction management processes while gaining practical field and office experience.

Work may involve a combination of office and field responsibilities and requires frequent interaction with project managers, superintendents, subcontractors, vendors, clients, and design professionals.

Position Requirements

  • Pursuing or recently completed a degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, Building Construction, or a related field.
  • Strong desire to learn commercial construction management.
  • Basic understanding of construction drawings and specifications preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities.
  • OSHA 10 preferred; OSHA 30 a plus.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Primary Responsibilities Include

  • Assist Project Managers with day-to-day management of construction projects.
  • Help coordinate tenant improvement and ground-up construction activities.
  • Assist with project scheduling, planning, and tracking milestones.
  • Review plans, specifications, and project documents under supervision.
  • Participate in project meetings and document meeting minutes.
  • Assist with subcontractor and vendor coordination.
  • Help track submittals, RFIs, change orders, permits, and project documentation.
  • Maintain project files and ensure documentation is complete and organized.
  • Assist with procurement and material tracking activities.
  • Monitor project progress and communicate updates to project management staff.
  • Support project cost tracking and budget reporting efforts.
  • Assist with quantity takeoffs and estimating activities.
  • Conduct site visits to observe project progress and verify work completion.
  • Assist in monitoring subcontractor compliance with project requirements and safety standards.
  • Help identify and communicate potential project issues, delays, or conflicts.
  • Support quality control and punch list activities.
  • Learn construction means, methods, sequencing, and scheduling processes.
  • Assist with project closeout documentation and turnover packages.
  • Maintain professional relationships with clients, subcontractors, vendors, inspectors, and project stakeholders.
  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures.

  • Experience with construction software such as Procore, Bluebeam, PlanGrid, or similar platforms is a plus.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn.

Essential Functions / Physical Requirements / Physical Demands

The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. These functions may be reviewed by an occupational health provider in any post-offer fitness-for-duty process.

  • Safely access all areas of active construction sites, including tenant improvement projects and ground-up construction projects.
  • Safely access roofs, stair towers, mechanical rooms, crawl spaces, unfinished structures, and multi-story buildings without reliance on an elevator.
  • Stand, walk, and conduct site inspections for extended periods, including up to eight (8) consecutive hours for full-time employees.
  • Safely ascend and descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and temporary construction access systems.
  • Safely stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, and work in confined or awkward spaces as required.
  • Lift, carry, push, pull, and move project materials, plans, samples, tools, and equipment up to twenty-five (25) pounds unassisted and heavier items with assistance when necessary.
  • Traverse uneven terrain, active construction zones, excavations, and partially completed structures safely.
  • Visually inspect construction activities, materials, installations, and workmanship for quality and compliance.
  • Read drawings, specifications, schedules, reports, and digital project documentation.
  • Operate computers, tablets, mobile devices, and project management software for extended periods.
  • Communicate effectively in person, by phone, and electronically with project teams, subcontractors, clients, and vendors.
  • Operate company vehicles as required to travel between project sites and office locations.
  • Wear and properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hats, safety glasses, high-visibility vests, gloves, and fall protection equipment when required.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and active construction environments.
  • Respond appropriately to visual and auditory safety warnings, alarms, and jobsite hazards.
