Workweek: 35 hours per week
Proposed Pay Rate: $60 per hour
Work Arrangement: Primarily on-site, with the possibility of one to two remote workdays per week after successful completion of a probationary period, subject to agency operational needs and management approval.

Position Summary

The New York City Department of Correction is seeking a qualified Windows Certified Server Administrator to support the administration, maintenance, monitoring, security, and performance of the agency’s Windows server environment and related infrastructure. The selected candidate will provide hands-on technical support for mission-critical systems in a public safety and correctional environment.

The position will be based primarily at NYC DOC Headquarters. However, there may be occasional business needs requiring travel to Rikers Island or other DOC facilities. On such occasions, the candidate may enter secure correctional environments and may encounter persons in custody in controlled settings, such as a warden’s office, administrative office, intake area, control room, or similar supervised location. The position does not involve correction officer duties, inmate supervision, or direct custody responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

The Windows Certified Server Administrator will be responsible for:

  • Administering, maintaining, and troubleshooting Microsoft Windows Server environments.
  • Managing Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, file services, print services, and related Windows infrastructure components.
  • Performing server patching, updates, vulnerability remediation, and system hardening in coordination with DOC IT security requirements.
  • Monitoring server performance, availability, storage utilization, backup status, and system health.
  • Supporting virtualization platforms, server provisioning, resource allocation, and related infrastructure services.
  • Assisting with backup, recovery, disaster recovery testing, and continuity of operations planning.
  • Creating and maintaining technical documentation, standard operating procedures, system diagrams, configuration records, and change logs.
  • Supporting user access administration, permissions, account management, and role-based access controls.
  • Responding to incidents, service requests, outages, and escalations in accordance with agency priorities.
  • Coordinating with network, cybersecurity, application, database, facilities, and vendor support teams.
  • Participating in change management, maintenance windows, system upgrades, and technology refresh initiatives.
  • Supporting audit, compliance, inventory, and asset management requirements.
  • Providing professional, responsive support to DOC IT staff, agency users, and approved vendors.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Candidates should possess the following:

  • Microsoft certification relevant to Windows Server administration, systems administration, cloud/hybrid administration, or equivalent Microsoft infrastructure discipline.
  • Hands-on experience administering Microsoft Windows Server in an enterprise environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, Windows security, permissions, and server troubleshooting.
  • Experience with server monitoring, patch management, system backup, restore procedures, and vulnerability remediation.
  • Familiarity with virtualization technologies such as VMware, Hyper-V, or similar platforms.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues across server, network, storage, application, and endpoint environments.
  • Ability to work independently while also coordinating effectively with technical teams, agency staff, and vendors.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to document work clearly and maintain accurate technical records.
  • Ability to work on-site Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
  • Ability to travel occasionally to Rikers Island or other DOC locations based on agency operational needs.

Preferred Qualifications

The following qualifications are preferred but not required:

  • Experience administering, supporting, or integrating Genetec Omnicast, Genetec Security Center, or similar video management/security camera platforms.
  • Experience supporting technology systems in a public safety, law enforcement, correctional, government, healthcare, or other high-security environment.
  • Experience with enterprise backup platforms, storage systems, endpoint management tools, or security monitoring platforms.
  • Experience with hybrid Microsoft environments, including Microsoft 365, Azure AD/Entra ID, or related identity and access management tools.
  • Experience supporting systems subject to audit, compliance, data retention, cybersecurity, or chain-of-custody requirements.

Work Location and Correctional Environment Notice

The primary work location is NYC Department of Correction Headquarters. The position is primarily administrative and technical in nature.

Occasional travel to Rikers Island or other DOC facilities may be required for business purposes, including technical support, system maintenance, project coordination, site assessment, or incident response. When working at a correctional facility, the candidate must comply with all DOC security protocols, facility rules, identification requirements, escort procedures, and instructions from authorized DOC personnel.

The candidate may encounter persons in custody in controlled and supervised environments, including but not limited to wardens’ offices, administrative areas, intake or control areas, or other secure locations. The position does not require the candidate to supervise, transport, guard, restrain, or otherwise exercise custody over persons in custody.

Work Schedule

The standard schedule is:

Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM

This is a 35-hour workweek. The role is expected to be primarily on-site during the probationary period. Following successful completion of the probationary period, the agency may permit one to two remote workdays per week, subject to operational needs, system support requirements, project demands, emergency response needs, and management approval.

Remote work is not guaranteed and may be modified, suspended, or revoked based on agency needs.

Proposed Compensation

The proposed hourly rate is $60 per hour.

At 35 hours per week, the $60 hourly rate equates to approximately $109,200 annually before overtime, if applicable, based on a 52-week work year.

This rate is intended to support recruitment of a qualified Windows Server Administrator for a primarily on-site public safety technology environment while remaining cost-conscious for a 35-hour agency workweek.

Security and Compliance Requirements

The selected candidate may be required to complete background screening, security clearance procedures, confidentiality acknowledgments, cybersecurity awareness training, facility access requirements, and any other onboarding or compliance steps required by NYC DOC or the City of New York.

The candidate must maintain confidentiality of agency systems, security information, credentials, network configurations, video/security system information, and any sensitive operational data encountered during the course of the assignment.
