Classroom Assistant Caregiver

UW-Milwaukee Children’s Learning Center seeks classroom Assistant Caregivers for the 2026 Summer semester who have availability between the hours of 7:00 AM-6:00 PM Monday through Friday. Applicants must be current students and enrolled in Spring 2026 classes and/or Fall 2026 classes and be able to provide proof of enrollment upon request. Some childcare experience is preferred but not required. 

***Priority consideration is given to applicants who are available to work a minimum of 15 hours per week.

 

Position Summary

Provide quality care and supervision to children in a classroom setting. Work on a team-teaching basis, provide daily communication to parents and assist in the maintenance of the classroom environment.

 

Qualifications

Because of the Center’s need to meet child: staff ratios in classrooms, your availability is critical to our hiring process. We will only contact you for an interview if your availability matches where we have needs, so it is very important that you provide an accurate schedule. Previous experience with children is preferred but not required. Must be willing to attend workshops/training and take at least one child development course to fulfill state licensing requirements for child care workers. Training and workshops are provided on paid status by the Center.

 

Essential Functions

Move around with children at their pace and be actively involved. Participate in individual, small group, and large group activities with children (e.g. art, flannel board stories, reading, singing, water play, cooking). Supervise children, keeping them in sight and sound at all times. Help to maintain a clean and healthy environment. Provide physical care giving, which includes napping, feeding, bathrooming, etc. Prepare bottles, snacks, and lunches for children as needed. Promote children’s growth by engaging in activities in the following categories: Physical/Gross Motor, Fine Motor, Social, Emotional, Cognitive, Self-help, Language Development – verbal and non-verbal, and Creative Arts. Gather and share information with families at arrival and departure to help ensure a smooth transition between home and Center. Communicate openly with coworkers and complete daily tasks with direction. Be responsible regarding work hours, staff meetings and absences from the Center.

 

Additional Duties

Communicate openly with coworkers. Administer simple first aid (e.g. ice on bump, wash cut). Help out in other classrooms when needed and as allowed by pandemic guidelines.

 

Physical Requirements

Requires lifting children, equipment, and/or supplies up to 40 pounds, getting down to child level and moving with children at their pace. Requires constant visual and auditory monitoring of children (indoors, outdoors, and on play equipment).
