About IDEA Lab Kids – Austin
IDEA Lab Kids is a STEAM education center dedicated to inspiring the next generation of innovators, leaders, and creative thinkers. Located in Central Austin, we offer after-school programs, summer camps, birthday parties, enrichment classes, homeschool programs, and more — all centered around hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.
We are the first IDEA Lab Kids location outside of Houston, TX, and we’re continuing to grow. This internship is a unique opportunity to work directly alongside the owner of a growing small business and help shape how our programs connect with the Austin community.
The Opportunity
We’re looking for a creative, outgoing, and motivated college student who wants real-world experience in marketing, communications, and community engagement. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys social media, storytelling, events, and building community connections.
You’ll help showcase what happens inside IDEA Lab Kids to families across Austin — highlighting student projects, staff personalities, camps, classes, and the incredible creativity happening every day in our classrooms.
This is not a “sit behind a desk” internship. You’ll help represent IDEA Lab Kids in the community, contribute ideas that actually get implemented, and play a real role in helping us grow.
What You’ll Do
Marketing & Social Media
• Create engaging social media content featuring student projects, classroom activities, staff spotlights, and camp experiences
• Help grow IDEA Lab Kids’ online presence across Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and email marketing platforms
• Assist with photography, short-form video, reels, and behind-the-scenes content
• Help plan and execute email campaigns, newsletters, and seasonal promotions
• Bring fresh marketing ideas and help test new outreach strategies to connect with Austin families
Community Outreach & Events
• Represent IDEA Lab Kids at school carnivals, STEM nights, community fairs, and local family events
• Help design fun, hands-on activities for kids at outreach events
• Ensure IDEA Lab Kids has a strong, welcoming, and memorable presence at partner school events
• Assist with distributing flyers and promotional materials in appropriate community spaces where welcomed
• Support outreach efforts with schools, PTAs, and community organizations
Business Development & Program Support
• Research partnership opportunities with local schools and organizations
• Assist with follow-up communication and relationship management
• Support light curriculum and program research to help us stay current with STEAM trends and student interests
What We’re Looking For
• Genuine enthusiasm for education, creativity, and working with kids/families
• Strong interest in marketing, communications, social media, or community engagement
• Comfortable taking initiative and contributing new ideas
• Organized, reliable, and able to follow through independently
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Comfortable attending local events and representing the IDEA Lab Kids brand professionally
• Pursuing a degree in Marketing, Communications, Business, Education, Media, or a related field
Goals for This Role
• Grow IDEA Lab Kids’ social media presence with authentic, high-quality content
• Help showcase the creativity and energy happening inside our classrooms to the broader Austin community
• Build stronger engagement with current and prospective families through newsletters and social media
• Create an outstanding presence at partner school events and community outreach opportunities
What You’ll Gain
• Hands-on experience in marketing, branding, community engagement, and small business operations
• Direct mentorship from a small business owner
• A portfolio of real-world content, campaigns, and event experience
• Opportunities to build leadership and communication skills
• Eligibility for academic credit (we are happy to coordinate with your university)
