The Jarrett Nature Center is Hatboro-Horsham School District's Outdoor Classroom. It is a living laboratory where students engage in hands-on learning and exploration experiences with their classroom teachers. It also provides a setting for the community to enjoy a variety of activities including nature walks, birding, and photography. Throughout the year, a variety of programs are offered to the community, often in cooperation with the Horsham Library.
The mission of the Jarrett Nature Center is to provide environmental education for the students of The Hatboro-Horsham School District, to protect and nurture an on-campus wildlife habitat, and to promote understanding, respect and responsibility for our environment through a supportive collaboration of educators, students, parents and community members.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
• Uphold the mission of Jarrett Nature Center in responsibilities and communications
• Schedule and implement onsite lessons for K-12 students and coordinate volunteers and other staffing for these visits
• With Director of Curriculum, create and maintain annual budget and maintain financial records
• Maintain other records and documents associated with JNC
• Send/receive correspondence for JNC
• Create and distribute general flyers and brochures for JNC events
• Plan, convene and facilitate JNC Advisory Board meetings and other related meetings to include agenda, calendars, reminders, etc.
• Communicate with HHSD staff members and volunteers of JNC as needed
• Maintain web site and pursue a variety of media venues
• Conduct regular visits to JNC and write monthly reports of grounds and maintenance needs
• Coordinate grounds maintenance needs with district operations staff
• Coordinate and monitor service projects from community organizations
• Pursue grant opportunities related to programming and improvement
• Liaison between the school district and outside agencies who deliver programming related to the JNC, and serve as JNC “tour guide” when needed
• Recommend, maintain, and coordinate short-term and long-range planning goals
• Coordinate with HHEF on issues pursuant to support and funding of JNC
• Attend Board meetings and other events as applicable to JNC
The Coordinator of the Jarrett Nature Center will be required to follow any other job-related instructions and perform other job-related duties requested.
POSITION SPECIFICATIONS - Coordinator of Jarrett Nature Center
Work Year: Part-time, 12-month position, 20 hours per week. Hours flexible outside of dedicated class visits schedules in fall and spring.
Physical Demands: Must be able to sit and/or stand, and lead classes on foot for periods of 1 hour or more. Limited lifting, carrying, and/or pulling Can perform light outdoor maintenance tasks
Sensory Abilities: Visual acuity to read correspondence, computer screen Auditory ability to communicate by telephone and/or normal conversation Ability to speak clearly and distinctly
Work Environment: Routinely engaged in outdoor work year-round Inside - office setting as needed
Temperament: Must be courteous and be able to deal effectively with children and adults Ability to work in an environment with frequent interruptions Ability to remain calm and diplomatic in stressful situations Must be cooperative, congenial and service-oriented Ability to weigh options, think rationally, and evaluate accurately Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
Specific Skills: Ability to organize and carry plans through to completion Ability to utilize effective management and leadership skills Ability to communicate effectively to all stakeholder groups Ability to effectively resolve conflicts
Experience with land management and/or environmental education preferred but not required
