Technical Strategy & Market Modeling Intern (Graduate Level Preferred)
Location: Washington DC / Arlington, VA
Duration: Summer or Summer/Fall 2026 (10–16 weeks)
Level: Master’s, or PhD student preferred (energy systems, energy market, engineering, economics, or related fields)
Role Overview
Fluence is seeking an analytically driven intern to support strategic modeling and market analysis focused on the intersection of energy storage, data center infrastructure, and grid modernization.
This role combines techno-economic modeling with market intelligence and strategy work. The intern will support structured analyses that inform commercial positioning, long-term forecasting, and emerging product strategy.
The position sits at the intersection of engineering assumptions, infrastructure economics, and energy market analysis. The intern will work on project-based initiatives related to data center growth, battery energy storage deployment, and evolving power architectures.
Responsibilities
Suggested:
Build and maintain structured market intelligence databases covering power demand trends, infrastructure pipelines, and competitive activity across global markets
Research grid infrastructure dynamics, capacity constraints, and regulatory developments in priority geographies
Monitor and track industry announcements and market developments relevant to the team's strategic focus areas
Synthesize cross-market findings into actionable insights for internal stakeholders
Support techno-economic analysis and cost modeling for emerging energy infrastructure configurations
Assist with scenario modeling, sensitivity analyses, and forecasting
Prepare summary briefs, data visualizations, and presentation materials
Document data sources, methodologies, and assumptions to ensure deliverables are reusable beyond the internship
Qualifications
Pursuing or recently completed a Master’s or PhD in Energy Systems, Energy Market, Energy Policy, Engineering, Economics, Finance, or a related quantitative field
Strong Excel and/or Python skills building structured models and datasets from diverse, unstructured sources
Ability to synthesize information across multiple sources into clear, structured outputs
Ability to communicate technical insights clearly to non-technical stakeholders
Self-directed work style with the ability to take a research question and deliver a structured analysis with minimal supervision
Preferred Experience
Familiarity with energy markets, power infrastructure, and US electricity market structures (ISOs/RTOs, interconnection processes)
Experience with techno-economic modeling, cost analysis, or market sizing
Python or other scripting language for data processing and visualization
Exposure to market research, competitive intelligence, or consulting-style analysis
Experience with energy transition, grid-scale storage, or data center
