About the role:
SUMMARY OF POSITION
In-Class Tutors work during the school day in assigned high school courses under the direction of the teacher to provide academic assistance, reinforce teacher's lessons, model good learning and study habits. Tutors receive their assignments based on their availability, subject matter knowledge and LEARN in-class tutoring program needs. In-Class Tutors report to the site's Program/Site Coordinator.
We are seeking tutors for the following high school subjects:
Math, all levels from Algebra to Calculus.
Science primarily Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Earth & Space Science.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES:
The In-Class Tutor job occurs during the regular school day, not after school.
Hours of work may occur between 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM, typical shifts are 4-6 hours.
What you'll do:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supports students in the classroom during the school day by providing academic assistance, reinforcing teacher's lessons, and modeling good learning and study habits;
- Provides small-group tutoring and/or assistance with in-class instruction, as directed by the teacher;
- Ensures the supervision and safety of assigned students at all times during program hours;
- Serves as a positive adult role model for students through appropriate dress, speech, and attitude;
- Arrives punctually to meet responsibilities on site;
- Assists the teacher in developing a motivational and safe learning atmosphere;
- Proactively seeks to encourage student achievement;
- Develops positive rapport with the teacher and their students;
- Promotes positive interactions between students, in accordance with student safety guidelines;
- Communicates student needs to Coordinator, teachers, school administration and parents as appropriate;
- Ensures program policies, procedures and requirements are met daily;
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
1. Graduation from High School
2. Passing score on the district examination for Instructional Assistants (distributed in-office during the interviewing process)
Notes:
- Experience working with youth, especially teens, in an educational setting is strongly desired.
- Ability to tutor and provide homework assistance in advanced math/science subjects is strongly desired.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
Interest in working with, mentoring, and tutoring at-promise teens;
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, peers, school staff and others;
- Ability to effectively tutor students in assigned subject(s);
- Ability to work as part of a team and act as a positive role model for students;
- Ability to write basic reports summarizing events.
LANGUAGE & COMPUTER SKILLS
- The ability to speak Spanish is desired at many of our school sites;
- Competence with Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
PHYSICAL SKILLS
- Requires the visual acuity to observe the activity of children and others.
- Must be able to lift and carry small loads (up to 25 lbs.) and stand for prolonged hours.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must complete Live Scan and obtain Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal Background Clearances, as well as Health Clearance (TB Test).
- Must be willing to work some evenings and weekends;
- Must be willing and able to travel anywhere in the region LEARN serves for a job assignment, off-site meetings, trainings, and events.
- Must be eligible to accept all Youth Leader job assignments.
Condition of Employment & Benefits:
This is a part-time casual, non-benefited, non-exempt, hourly position. This position requires the candidate to be available to work 5 days per week, Monday through Friday, during program hours, which is primarily after school and occasionally on weekends. Hours of work will vary from 15 - 30 hours per week; specific times and schedules vary, depending upon the school and the needs of the program.
This position and all other part-time casual field staff positions are considered "school employee positions". The work calendar aligns with the academic calendars of our partner school districts. The job has recess breaks during fall, winter, spring and summer. The job resumes after every break and staff are expected to return to work after the recess break on the date requested by LEARN.
The pay range for this role is:
21 - 21 USD per hour (All Locations)
