Policy Analyst – Information Technology Services (ITS)

Department: Information Technology Services
Location: UW–Whitewater
Hours: Part‑time Summer (~20 hrs/week or more)

Credit Option: POLISCI 493 (1–12 credits. Each credit requires 45 hours of internship during the academic term; for example, a 3-credit internship requires 135 hours total.) It is the student’s responsibility to verify through their Advisor and Department Chair that this position can be utilized for this credit. 
Compensation: $13/hour

About the Role

Are you interested in how public policy shapes technology, data governance, and security practices on a university campus? The ITS Policy Analyst works at the intersection of public policy, IT governance, and organizational process improvement. You’ll help modernize campus technology policies, document key IT workflows, and collaborate with experts across security, identity management, and infrastructure. This student employee position is ideal for students who enjoy analytical writing, structured problem‑solving, and translating complex information into clear, accessible policy language.

This position reports to the Strategic Services Manager and collaborates with ITS leadership, Information Security, IAM, and others to ensure that ITS documentation is accurate, aligned with Universities of Wisconsin System policies, and reflective of current operational practices. This role emphasizes analytical work, structured collaboration, and policy‑relevant problem solving. This is a paid position. The student employee can work with their department to apply this position to a UWW-approved internship through Polisci 493 or equivalent if desired.

What You’ll Do

As a Policy Analyst, you will:

  • Review, update, and modernize ITS policies and procedures
  • Draft and refine security and data governance policies
  • Develop documentation for student employees performing non‑Help Desk IT work (e.g., AP installation, camera installation, ladder‑based tasks)
  • Document Identity & Access Management (IAM) processes
  • Create process maps, workflow diagrams, and policy summaries
  • Interview ITS staff and campus partners to gather insights
  • Align ITS documentation with Universities of Wisconsin System policies
  • Support communication and rollout of updated policies
