Position Summary

The Welder/Pipefitter Internship provides students with practical experience in industrial welding, fabrication, pipefitting, and maintenance operations within a heavy industrial environment. Interns will work directly with experienced maintenance personnel and gain exposure to equipment installation, repair, fabrication projects, and plant maintenance activities.

This internship is an excellent opportunity for students pursuing careers in welding technology, pipefitting, industrial maintenance, mechanical trades, or related technical fields.

What You'll Learn

  • Industrial welding techniques, including Stick, MIG, and TIG welding.
  • Structural steel fabrication and assembly.
  • Pipefitting and piping system installation.
  • Blueprint and fabrication drawing interpretation.
  • Equipment maintenance and repair practices.
  • Safe use of hand tools, power tools, torches, and fabrication equipment.
  • Industrial safety procedures, including lockout/tagout, hot work permits, and confined space awareness.
  • Preventive and corrective maintenance practices in a process manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with fabrication of structural steel, platforms, ladders, and supports.
  • Support maintenance personnel with welding and repair projects.
  • Assist with installation of pumps, motors, valves, piping systems, and other process equipment.
  • Read and interpret basic drawings and blueprints under supervision.
  • Perform material preparation, cutting, fitting, grinding, and assembly tasks.
  • Assist with inspections and maintenance activities throughout the facility.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Complete assigned projects and documentation accurately.
  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Required

  • Currently enrolled in a Welding Technology, Pipefitting, Industrial Maintenance, Mechanical Technology, Manufacturing Technology, or related trade program.
  • Basic knowledge of welding and fabrication principles.
  • Strong willingness to learn and develop technical skills.
  • Ability to work safely in an industrial environment.
  • Reliable transportation to and from the facility.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred

  • Previous welding coursework or hands-on welding experience.
  • Experience reading blueprints or technical drawings.
  • Familiarity with hand and power tools.
  • OSHA 10 certification or other safety training.

Work Environment

Interns will work in an active industrial facility and may be exposed to:

  • Manufacturing and process equipment
  • Outdoor work environments
  • Noise, dust, and varying weather conditions
  • Physical activities including standing, lifting, bending, climbing, and walking

All required safety training and personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided.
