The work required of this position includes training and work experience in the development, test,
and evaluation of automated systems, programs, hardware and software interfacing techniques, and
adapting advanced methods and techniques in computer science to solving complex and highly
demanding computer processing requirements integral to the mission of the organization to which
assigned. The scientist trainee learns, through formal classroom training and hands-on experience with
senior level scientists, including such duties as indicated below:


1. Conducts routine operational analyses and formulates system concept architectural designs, functional
specifications, software development, and system integration and documentation aspects of computer,
systems.
2. Works with senior scientists, engineers, and/or mathematicians on computer operating systems and
language processors.
3. Evaluates alternative solutions to problems and prepare justifications to support the most appropriate
recommended solution.
4. Assists senior professionals in investigating structure and functioning of computer networks; developing
advanced concepts of automation and information acquisition, real-time processing, display, control and
transfer methods; and performs research on fundamental problems in the design and development of
operating systems and other large software systems.
5. Prepares routine reports and programs on technical assignments arui,updates documentation for all
projects for which a computer system is developed.
