Location: Ferndale, Michigan, USA - In Office
McDowell & Associates is looking for an entry-mid level civil engineer with an interest in geotechnical engineering to join our main company office in Ferndale, Michigan. The ideal candidate is someone eager to learn about the geotechnical engineering field from field work to laboratory testing to report writing. Strengths should include being detail-oriented, organized, and looking to be an active team member to perform field testing and assist with the management of multiple projects. Experience in construction and/or site development would be a plus.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering (GPA > 3.0)
- Work Experience: 0-3 years
- Work or internships associated with geotechnical engineering, drilling, or construction materials testing preferred
- Solid written and verbal communication skills
- Experience with Microsoft Office suite of programs
- GIS mapping experience preferred
Overview of Job Responsibilities
- Creating maps and location plans
- Perform infiltration testing (typically double ring or cased borehole tests)
- Occasional work in the soils lab. Primary responsibilities in the lab include soil classification to verify boring logs along with moisture, density, unconfined compression, Atterberg Limits and Hydrometer tests
- Witness drilling and writing boring logs
- Obtain slope inclinometer readings as needed
- Check piezometers for groundwater levels
- Observe and document test pits
- Obtain background information on various sites (USDA Soil Survey, Historic Aerial Photos, previous report review/summarize, etc.)
- Prepare infiltration test reports to be reviewed by a PE
- Prepare basic Soils Investigation Reports to be reviewed by a PE
