About Detroit Cristo Rey
Located in the heart of Mexicantown in Southwest Detroit, Detroit Cristo Rey High School (DCRHS) is a diverse learning community that educates young people of limited economic means to become men and women of faith, purpose, and service. Our rigorous and personalized Catholic college preparatory curriculum, integrated with a corporate work-study experience, prepares students to succeed in college and beyond. DCRHS is one of 42 high schools nationwide affiliated with the Cristo Rey Network. The Network began more than 25 years ago with an education and work-study model that has proven to be universally successful. Working at DCRHS is unlike working in a traditional high school environment. As an independent private school, we do not assign students to DCRHS; they choose us.
Faculty and staff are the backbone of the school, and the development of relationships is foundational to each student's success. The success of the program is demonstrated by the 100% college acceptance rate since our inaugural graduating class of 2012. Our aspiration is that all our students graduate from high school and college and become future leaders in our churches, institutions, businesses, nonprofits, and the broader community.
General Description
As teachers at Detroit Cristo Rey, we are role models for our students, and as adults, we are role models for them. All employees are expected to dress and behave in a professional manner at all times, especially when in front of a student(s) and communicating with parents.
Full-time teaching assignments encompass teaching six classes daily, administering one duty period (such as study hall, lunch duty, assisting the Title I teacher, or subbing for one period), and utilizing one assigned preparation period. Part-time teaching assignments range from 1 to 4 48-minute classes. A duty period may be required depending on the number of courses taught. The Teacher will collaborate with teachers of the same subject to ensure alignment and continuity of material, as well as with all other teachers to share best practices in techniques, technology use, and consistency of message regarding student expectations and success. Time for departmental and grade-level collaborations is built into our academic calendar. The Teacher is expected to track and communicate student performance, suggest and support strategic initiatives to enhance the academic offerings and performance of the student body, and fulfill all other tasks and responsibilities as required. Teachers report to the Principal; however, they will meet regularly with the Assistant Principal of Academics and the Assistant Principal of Student and Family Life throughout the school year. They will also work very closely with the Corporate Work Study team members to ensure a positive balance between work and school for each student. When necessary, the Teacher will also collaborate with the social-emotional counselors to ensure that any student concerns not related to academics are communicated and addressed.
