Family Support Specialist
This paid internship is funded by the Serving the City Internships program and is available only to students at Fordham College at Lincoln Center and Fordham College at Rose Hill who will be enrolled throughout the duration of the internship. Students enrolled in other schools at Fordham or who will graduate or transfer before the internship end date are not eligible.

End Date: August 21, 2026
Stipend: A stipend of $2,448 for 144 hours of service, is distributed directly by Fordham in two equal installments of $1224 shortly after the midpoint and end date of your assignment.

Our mission is to support single dads with resources that promote their children’s success, strengthen their families, and help build legacies that last for generations.
Position Overview
The Family Services Social Worker is responsible for serving as the first point of contact for fathers entering SDU’s programs. This role ensures that each dad receives a welcoming experience, ongoing monthly support, and access to tailored resources that strengthen their stability and well‑being. This position is ideal for someone who is organized, compassionate, and committed to helping fathers navigate real‑life challenges.’
Responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
Conducting Outreach & Monthly Check Ins
- Call and connect with SDU fathers for initial intake conversations
- Conduct monthly follow-up calls to track progress and identify new needs
- Maintain a supportive, judgment free approach during all interactions
Maintain & Update Father Files
- Enter and update father information in SDU’s internal system
- Document monthly check ins, goals, referrals, and progress
- Ensure all records remain accurate, confidential, and up to date
Create Customized Resource Packets
Build resource packets based on father’s needs (housing, employment, legal, childcare, mental health, etc.)
- Update packets monthly as needs change
- Coordinate with SDU leadership to ensure resources remain current and relevant
Locate & Verify Community Resources
- Research local and citywide resources that support fathers and families
- Maintain a working list of housing programs, job training opportunities, legal services, mental health providers, and emergency support
- Share verified resources with fathers in a clear and accessible way
Support Program Coordination
- Collaborate with SDU staff to connect fathers to events, workshops, and support programs
- Flag urgent needs or high priority cases to the Executive Director
- Help ensure a smooth, consistent experience for every father in the SDU community
Qualifications:
✅ Compassionate, patient, and committed to supporting single fathers
✅ Comfortable making phone calls and engaging in supportive conversations
✅ Organized, detail‑oriented, and reliable with follow‑through
✅ Able to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information
✅ Experience in social work, social services, or community-based work is a plus
✅ Available for a flexible monthly commitment
