Urban Farm Intern

Boggy Creek Farm is a historic, regenerative urban farm located just east of downtown Austin. Since 1992, the farm has grown vegetables, herbs, flowers, and eggs for the local community through our on-site Farmstand and chef partnerships. We are a small, hardworking team dedicated to sustainable agriculture, food access, land stewardship, hospitality, and preserving one of Austin’s oldest continuously farmed properties, dating back to 1841.

We are seeking motivated, curious, and dependable interns interested in gaining hands-on experience in small-scale regenerative farming and local food systems.

Internship Overview

Interns participate in many aspects of daily farm operations and gain exposure to seasonal crop production, irrigation, regenerative growing practices, harvest systems, Integrated Pest Management (IPM), market operations, and community engagement. This is a physically active, outdoor learning experience designed for individuals interested in sustainable agriculture, food systems, agritourism, or environmental education.

Internships are educational and experiential in nature and may be customized based on seasonal farm needs, intern interests, and skill level.

Interns may assist with:

  • Seeding, transplanting, cultivation, and harvesting of vegetables and fruits
  • Bed preparation, compost application, and regenerative soil practices
  • Irrigation setup, maintenance, and monitoring
  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM), including crop scouting, handpicking pests, monitoring pest pressure, identifying beneficial insects, and using backpack sprayers to apply approved organic and protective crop treatments under supervision
  • Weed management using hand tools and ecological practices
  • Washing, packing, labeling, and preparing produce for market and chef orders
  • Farmstand setup, merchandising, and customer interaction
  • Caring for chickens (laying hens) and assisting with compost systems
  • Greenhouse and propagation work
  • Assisting with volunteer groups and special events
  • General farm maintenance and organization

Skills & Qualifications

Ideal candidates are:

  • Interested in sustainable agriculture and local food systems
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions, including Texas heat
  • Able to perform repetitive physical tasks, bend, squat, kneel, and lift or carry up to 50 pounds
  • Reliable, punctual, communicative, and willing to ask questions
  • Positive team players with a strong work ethic and attention to detail
  • Comfortable working around insects, mud, chickens (laying hens), and uneven terrain
  • Able to follow instructions carefully while maintaining awareness of safety and efficiency

Previous farming experience is not required, though enthusiasm for learning is essential.

Schedule

Interns are expected to work a minimum of 2–3 days per week, totaling approximately 10–15 hours weekly. Shift schedules vary seasonally, but typically fall between the hours of 7:30am and 12:30pm. Occasional Saturdays may be requested during Farmstand hours, events, or special projects.

Additional Information

Boggy Creek Farm values respect, curiosity, teamwork, and stewardship of both land and community. Interns are expected to contribute positively to the farm environment and treat coworkers, customers, animals, and the property with care and professionalism.

This internship is intended to provide meaningful educational and hands-on experience within a working regenerative farm environment.
