Job Title:  Principal

Reports to:  School Board of Woodburn Lutheran School


 

MISSION STATEMENT

It is the mission of Woodburn Lutheran School to provide a compassionate and caring Christ-centered education while fostering academic excellence.


 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Principal of Woodburn Lutheran School serves as the educational leader. The Principal is responsible for school culture, managing policies, regulations, and procedures to ensure that all students are supervised in a faith based and safe environment that meets the approved curriculum and mission of Woodburn Lutheran School.


 

The Principal will work collaboratively to direct and nurture all members of the school staff and student body. The Principal has the responsibilities for academic and curriculum development, personnel management and development, scheduling, implementation of strategic vision, extracurricular activities, before and after care, and safety/emergency procedures.


 

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for executing policies adopted by the Association and the School Board.
  • Responsible for all special school programs, religious services, projects and co-curricular activities (even though the direction of such activities may be delegated to others).
  • Prepares budgets and submits to the School Board.
  • Prepares and publishes school calendar (pending School Board approval)
  • Develops and carries on a continuous program of evaluating the school.
  • Reports to: {a} pastors, {b} staff, {c} School Board, {d} church councils, {e} congregations.
  • Assists in setting up the monthly School Board meeting agenda.
  • Provides professional leadership and direction to the School Board in the performance of its task, especially in shaping policy.
  • Serves to identify, gather, and present data necessary for the School Board to perform its task.
  • Communicates the decisions of the School Board to teachers, parents, church members and community.


 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Stresses the distinctive objectives of the Lutheran School and is concerned that the entire program is Christ-centered.
  • Constantly evaluates the school and its program while aware of the total parish program. 
  • Works toward a personal knowledge of each child in school. 
  • Visits classes regularly and keeps records of visits and show concern that each class is meeting its work program. 
  • Meets with teachers, emphasizing the need for Christian instruction and discipline. 
  • Promotes professional growth of the staff.
  • Is responsible for playground, corridor, gymnasium, lunchroom and other supervision, even though he/she delegates the actual responsibility.  
  • Arranges for the development and supervision of library activities and facilities. 
  • Is concerned about all aspects of the teaching-learning process, constantly studying teacher ability, educational objectives, pupil needs, the curriculum, instructional methods, the environment of the school, etc.
  • Prepares faculty/school handbook and guidelines.
  • Assists teachers in establishing meaningful short-and long-range goals, developing effective lesson plans, and adjusting to individual student needs.
  • Serves as a counselor and coach to teachers more than a judge of them in improving the instructional program.
  • Makes a conscientious effort to conduct a teacher evaluation program that is effective and objective, providing both positive and negative feedback


 

PROMOTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Promotes a clear understanding of the distinctive nature of the school, both in the congregations and the community.
  • Regularly reports to the congregations and the School Board the purpose and work of the school.
  • Responsible for all public relations, even though some areas may be delegated.
  • Deals with salesmen, local, state and national officials, the public schools, synodical officers, and the general public.
  • Prepares for general distribution a school handbook listing philosophy, objectives, policies, services, personnel, etc. (parents and students).
  • Develops plans to identify and recruit full-time workers for the school.
  • Develops plans to recruit students for the school. 
  • Supports and participates actively in congregational activities.  The principal exercises spiritual leadership in other congregational agencies of Christian education.  
  • Provides a planned parent-education program.  Encourages formal affiliation with the NLPTL and works with the local PTL executive committee in planning a worthwhile annual program.  Utilizes formal and informal settings to communicate to and encourage parents in their task.
  • Exerts leadership in offering the services of the school to the total congregation and the community.
  • Participates in community activities.  
  • Uses congregation-wide media for publicity and information.  It is essential that all members of the congregations be well informed of the purpose, value, and accomplishments of the school, even if they do not have children in the school. 
  • Disseminates school news to parents.  The need to keep parents informed on school policies and activities should determine the frequency of such newsletters.  


 

PERSONNEL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Takes a leading role in securing qualified personnel for the school. 
  • Orients new staff members, including non-instructional personnel. 
  • Works to create a creative spirit among the staff members. 
  • Represents the needs and interests of the staff before the School Board and the congregations. 
  • Applies Matthew 18:15-17 in dealing with staff members, enlisting the help of the pastor, the School Board and, if necessary, the Association.
  • Approves all admissions, transfers, promotions, accelerations, demotions, suspensions, or expulsions of students in accordance with the policies adopted by the School Board. 
  • Supports teachers in their leadership role in their classrooms, especially in disciplinary problems and decisions.
  • Praises and commends outstanding teacher performance, both privately and publicly. 


 

ACREDIATION STANDARDS - PRINCIPAL

  • Participate in conferences and conventions that are required by the Synodical Handbook and in other appropriate conferences.
  • Hold membership in the Lutheran Education Association and at least one other professional organization and regularly read professional periodicals.
  • Be aware of and participate if appropriate in the whole educational ministry of the operating congregations.
  • Work with the public schools at every opportunity.
  • Clearly define the responsibilities and accountability for all support staff (secretary, maintenance, cafeteria workers, transportation persons, etc.)
