Introduction
This opportunity will provide hands-on experience in data analysis, data engineering, and data governance. The intern will work alongside Maryland Benefits Data Team professionals to support data-driven initiatives that directly impact the delivery of public assistance programs across the State of Maryland.
Main Purpose of Position
The main purpose of this position is to assist the Maryland Benefits Data Team in collecting, analyzing, and reporting on benefits program data to improve service delivery and operational efficiency. The intern will contribute to meaningful projects while developing professional skills in a government data environment.
Primary duties include:
- Assisting with data collection, cleaning, and validation from various benefits program sources.
- Supporting the development and maintenance of data pipelines and automated reporting workflows.
- Assisting with data governance policy implementation, including documentation of data standards, data quality policies, and compliance requirements.
- Creating data visualizations, dashboards, and written summaries for internal stakeholders.
- Participating in team meetings, project planning sessions, and presentations.
- Performing other related duties as assigned by the supervising team.
Internship Schedule
The internship runs 12 weeks between June and August. The specific start/end dates, hours, and schedule will be determined in collaboration between the intern and supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
The following qualifications are required of all applicants:
- Applicants must be current undergraduate or graduate students enrolled at an accredited college or university.
- A GPA of 3.0 or above is required for academic credit.
- Relevant fields of study include, but are not limited to: Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Information Systems, Public Policy, Social Work, or a related discipline.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a professional government environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
While not required, the following qualifications are preferred:
- Experience with data analysis tools such as Python, R, SQL, or Excel.
- Familiarity with data visualization platforms (e.g., QuickSight, Tableau, Power BI).
- Knowledge of or coursework in public benefits programs, social services, or government administration.
- Experience with data pipelines, ETL processes, or database management.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Prior internship, research, or volunteer experience in a government or nonprofit setting.
