About the Role

MD Benefits is seeking a highly motivated Cloud Infrastructure Engineering Intern to join our AWS Cloud Implementation division. You will work directly alongside our core engineering teams—Cloud Service Engineering, PaaS Service Engineering, IAM Service Engineering, Automation, and IaaS Service Engineering. This is a hands-on technical role designed to give you enterprise-level experience in building, securing, and scaling large-scale government cloud environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Infrastructure Automation: Assist the Automation team in writing, testing, and deploying Infrastructure as Code (IaC) scripts using tools like Terraform or AWS CloudFormation.
  • Identity & Security: Support the IAM Service Engineering team in conducting access audits, refining security groups, and implementing least-privilege policies.
  • PaaS & IaaS Support: Collaborate with PaaS and IaaS engineers to monitor system health, optimize compute/storage resources, and deploy foundational AWS services.
  • Cloud Operations: Participate in daily stand-ups, assist with troubleshooting cloud service requests, and document architectural configurations.
  • Project Delivery: Complete a capstone internship project focused on optimizing a specific cloud workload or automating a manual infrastructure process.

Learning Opportunities

  • Enterprise Cloud Experience: Gain practical, hands-on experience navigating and managing cloud environments at a massive, state-wide scale.
  • Modern DevOps Practices: Master the fundamentals of Infrastructure as Code (IaC), CI/CD pipelines, and cloud automation strategies.
  • Cross-Domain Engineering: Develop a holistic understanding of cloud architecture by rotating through or collaborating with our IaaS, PaaS, IAM, and Automation teams.
  • Professional Mentorship: Receive 1-on-1 guidance from senior government IT professionals and certified Cloud Solution Architects.

Team Impact

  • Accelerating Innovation: Your contributions to our backlog will directly reduce manual toil for our senior engineers, allowing the team to focus on strategic cloud modernization.
  • Enhanced Security Posture: By supporting IAM audits and access management, you will help MD Benefits maintain strict compliance and safeguard sensitive citizen data.
  • Fresh Perspectives: You will bring new ideas, modern academic insights, and vital energy to our infrastructure teams, ultimately supporting MD Benefit’s mission to deliver reliable, integrated human services to the residents of Maryland.
  • Empowering Automation & IaaS: By taking on foundational scripting and provisioning tasks, you will help our IaaS and Automation engineers reduce their manual workloads, allowing them to speed up the delivery of core infrastructure.
  • Scaling PaaS & Cloud Services: Your assistance in monitoring and optimizing platform health will enable the PaaS and Cloud Service Engineering teams to provide stable, highly available environments for MD Benefit’s critical, citizen-facing applications.
  • Bridging Domain Silos: By working across all five implementation pillars, your documentation and cross-team collaboration will build a more unified, efficient Cloud Infrastructure Implementation division.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Actively pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity, or a related field.
  • Fundamental knowledge of cloud computing concepts (experience with AWS services like EC2, S3, or IAM is a strong plus).
  • Basic proficiency in at least one scripting or programming language (e.g., Python, Bash, JSON/YAML).
  • Familiarity with Windows or Linux operating systems and basic networking concepts.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, intellectual curiosity, and a genuine interest in public sector technology.
