Health Literacy Classes

PLEASE NOTE: Although this posting may display a longer availability window on Handshake due to system requirements, applications for this internship must be submitted by June 12th.

Description:

This project supports the center’s Health Literacy Initiative, which provides free health literacy and contextualized English classes to adult learners across the city. Classes are held at community health clinics to ensure learning is accessible, relevant, and directly connected to participant's real life healthcare experiences. The fellow will play a key support role in the success of this initiative by assisting both the instructor and the class coordinator inside and outside the classroom. Responsibilities include providing administrative and logistical support, helping prepare materials, supporting classroom activities, listening sessions, assisting with participant communication and follow-up, and contributing to data collection and reporting efforts. Through this work, the fellow will gain experience in community-based education, resource navigation, health equity initiatives, and program operations. Topics we cover in class include filling out medical history forms, insurance forms, patient portal access, symptoms, and conditions, etc.

Ideal candidates that can support this work will be reliable, proactive, responsive, and collaborative in a team setting.

Importance to Public Health

The program helps learners build practical English skills while gaining the confidence to navigate the healthcare systems for themselves and their families. Instructions include calling to schedule appointments, understanding well-child visits, reading medication labels and dosage instructions, communicating with healthcare providers, visiting the dentist, and interpreting common medical forms. All classes are taught by professional adult education instructors.  To reduce barriers to participation, we provide free childcare and transportation.

Project Deliverables

This intern will work closely with the class coordinator and director to administer pre and post class surveys and analyze data. There is an opportunity to look at the data in a variety of ways and brainstorm new measurables. They will be provided with training, relevant materials, etc.
