Staff Writer I, Mvskoke Media

Salary Range:  $31,865-41,579

 

Description: 

Mvskoke Media is the constitutionally protected free press of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, headquartered in Okmulgee, OK, this job is Tulsa-based. 

Under the direction of the Managing Editor, the Staff Writer at Mvskoke Media plays a key role in producing compelling stories that inform, educate, and engage readers. Staff writers work closely with the editorial team to craft narratives that reflect the voice of the Mvskoke Citizens and resonate with the Mvskoke News audience.  

 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

• Responsible for researching and writing news articles, features, and stories across a wide range of topics, including cultural events, political developments, and community issues affecting the citizens of Muscogee (Creek) Nation 

• Identifying and pitching story ideas that align with Mvskoke Media's mission and editorial standards. 

• Works closely with the editorial team to ensure that all content meets editorial standards and deadlines, and provides editorial support by assisting in editing and proofreading stories as needed. 

• Contributes to digital media efforts by assisting with content creation for Mvskoke Media's website, social media channels, and newsletters. 

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

• Associate's degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field, although equivalent work experience will also be considered. 

• Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills 

 • Ability to work independently and collaboratively • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment • Familiarity with digital media platforms • Experience with social media

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Mass Communications, or English with five years of relevant experience in the newsroom. Preferred candidates have familiarity with multimedia tools such as video production or photography and demonstrate proficiency in content management systems. Knowledge of the Muscogee (Creek) language and government is also preferred. Muscogee (Creek) or Native American preferred.
