Junior specialist – Department of Urologic Surgery

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DESIGNATED AREAS OF EXPERTISE 

The Junior Specialist has the general duties of working closely with the Department of Urologic Surgery members in the planning and execution of clinical and research projects related to the department. 

 

I. CLINICAL/RESEARCH                                                                                                     (90% Effort

 

A. The incumbent will collaborate with the Department of Urologic Surgery clinical and research personnel on new and ongoing projects. Specific duties may include:

 

  • Coordinate and execute clinical laboratory and genomics testing for patients treated at UC Davis Health including being involved with the consenting and specimen retrieval process
  • Working with residents, faculty, and staff in the clinical setting to facilitate lab testing and assist the clinical research coordinator with new and ongoing clinical trials
  • Assist with database creation, data collection and processing
  • Actively contributes to publishable research by collecting and interpreting data.
  • Assist with abstract and publication preparation and submission
  • Organize, analyze, and present clinical and research data to research team
  • Participate in weekly group meetings and present findings at both internal and external conferences.

 

 

II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE                                                                                    (5% Effort

 

  • The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills and the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • The ideal candidate will have experience working directly with physicians and patients in a clinical environment
  • The incumbent may have the opportunity to submit data for presentations to relevant conferences
  • Active participation in weekly meetings, journal club presentations, presentations from outside speakers, and weekly workshops to help incumbents develop their career goals.
  • Participation in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and/or review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications related to area of expertise.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to maintain detailed and accurate records.
  • Problem-solving, deductive reasoning, and decision-making skills

 

III UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE                                                                            (5% Effort)

 

The Junior Specialist may be expected to provide mentorship to research personnel such as undergraduate research assistants and volunteer students that rotate through the lab. They will be expected to participate and contribute to laboratory and group meetings, committee service, and other activities, as applicable. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, preferably with experience in working directly with patients in a health care setting. 
  • The job also requires a highly motivated, organized, and focused individual who is eager to learn and to take initiative. 
  • This is a full-time appointment, with occasional evening or weekend hours expected for management of studies.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills, utilizing available resources and good judgment.
  • The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate that they are legally authorized to work in the United States. The University will not offer sponsorship of a visa for this position.
