Job Title: Youth Sports Lead (Summer Gym Supervisor) 

Department: Youth Sports 

Classification: Non-exempt, part time, seasonal 

Job Grade: 3 

Reports to: Youth Sports Program Coordinator 

 

This is a limited duration, summertime position, starting in June and ending in August.

Hours/Days 

Scheduled hours will be determined with your supervisor, and will occur within the following times:

  • Weekdays -- 9am - 9:30pm

Weekends -- 9am - 8pm 

Additional hours for meetings and trainings will be required

Position Summary 
As a Youth Sports Lead, you will be part of an amazing team creating a safe and fun environment for youth and adults to learn fundamental skills centered around sports. Through an engaging and fun environment, you will provide age-appropriate instructions, learning support, teach teamwork and social skills, and support youth and adults. Youth Sports Leads are expected to create positive, nurturing relationships with youth and adults, while building cooperative relationships with families. We provide quality experiences to youth and families that focus on the YMCA values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. 

At the moment, we are primarily seeking to hire Gym Supervisors for our main Eugene YMCA location -- the Don Stathos Campus. Please read below for desired hours.

 
Essential Functions 

Maintains and is responsible for YMCA gym and field spaces, including safety, equipment, cleanliness, set up, and takedown.

Provides lead supervision during games, clinics, practices, and/or gym programming, ensuring Y rules and Code of Conduct as well as general positive sports culture, are fostered. 

Creates, implements, and leads clinic curriculum centered around current YMCA sports programming.

Provides supervision and support for youth, adults, coaches, players, spectators, volunteers, and staff.

Addresses and responds to safety, behavior, and facility concerns.

Provides excellent customer service to youth, families, adults, coaches, volunteers, and staff.

Actively engages with youth and adults through positive interaction, encouragement, supervision, redirection, communication, teamwork, professionalism, and problem-solving with participants, families, and staff.

Demonstrates an understanding of youth sports rules, game flow, fair play expectations, and YMCA program standards while maintaining a working knowledge of YMCA mission, values, purpose, goals, policies, and standards of excellence.

Follows YMCA policies and procedures related to medical situations, behavior management, emergency response, supervision and monitoring, and youth protection.

Follows all cleaning, sanitization, and equipment care protocols.

Maintains ongoing communication with the Youth Sports Coordinator and works closely regarding program operations and concerns.

Complete all required trainings, certifications, and assigned responsibilities by scheduled due dates.

If required to drive while on duty (either your own vehicle or a Y-owned vehicle), must maintain a current, valid Oregon driver’s license, a DMV driving record that meets YMCA standards, and evidence of insurability throughout entire term of employment.

Minimum Qualifications 

Must be at least 18 years of age 

 
Preferred Qualifications 

Previous experience working in youth sports programs 

 
Professional Competencies 

Excellent oral communication skills 

Ability to connect with people of diverse backgrounds 

Ability to work both independently and as part of a team 

Ability to demonstrate a friendly, courteous and professional manner while working with members and staff, and the ability to understand, articulate and enforce YMCA policies and procedures in a positive way
