Heavy Duty Mechanic Welder
Are you a skilled mechanic with welding experience and a passion for keeping equipment running safely and efficiently? The Dunn County Highway Department is seeking a Heavy Duty Mechanic/Welder to help maintain and repair highway equipment and vehicles.
In this role, you’ll diagnose and repair mechanical issues, perform preventative maintenance, and weld/fabricate equipment as needed. We’re looking for someone with strong troubleshooting skills, welding experience, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety.
Schedule: Four 10-hour days, Monday–Thursday, with occasional overtime/comp time as needed.

Anticipated starting pay range is between $26.59/hr and $28.66/hr.
Primary Responsibilities
The following duties are primarily performed and which are essential for this position. Employees are expected to be able to perform each of these job duties satisfactorily and successfully to be qualified for the position. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Diagnoses and repairs trucks and heavy equipment; overhauls diesel and gasoline engines; diagnoses and repairs fuel systems; repairs drive train, including clutch, drivelines, and transmission; rebuilds and repairs suspension; diagnoses and repairs air and hydraulic brake systems; diagnoses and repairs electrical system problems.
- Repairs and diagnoses hydraulic pumps, valves, cylinders, and motors; repairs hydrostatic systems.
- Fabricates, welds, or repairs equipment utilizing arc, wire feed, gas welding equipment, lathes, milling machines, or power tools.
- Repairs and rebuilds small engines.
- Maintains inventories of supplies, iron, and materials for the repair, servicing and/or welding functions.
- Installs hydraulic systems on trucks.
- Maintains and services building electrical, HVAC, and heating systems.
- Responds to emergencies, high water, blocked roads, washouts, snowstorms, etc. as required.
- Performs other duties of a comparable level/type, as required.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Associate’s Degree in heavy duty mechanics, welding or other related field.
- Minimum total of two (2) years previous experience in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment and vehicles.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Valid driver’s license or the ability to travel between work locations.
- Valid Wisconsin Commercial Driver License (CDL)
- Employee is required to furnish their own hand tools.
- Prior to hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant’s suitability and competence to perform in the position.
- Prior to hire, a drug screen will be conducted.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES QUALIFICATIONS

- Extensive knowledge of vehicle/equipment repair/maintenance and warranty policies, practices, procedures and administrative issues.
- Knowledge of county procedures, practices, and regulations in regards to truck and equipment repair.
- Knowledge of safety requirement and regulations, OSHA & MSHA requirements and other rules and regulations pertaining to the job functions.
- Knowledge of equipment used in the construction and maintenance activities in the department.
- Knowledge of county and department procedures pertaining to purchasing supplies and materials.
- Knowledge of vehicle and equipment value, life cycle and specification requirements.
- Knowledge of welding, lathe, and milling equipment used in fabrication procedures and practices.
- Knowledge of building maintenance repair and procedures.
- Skill in diagnosing, repairing, troubleshooting and maintaining trucks, maintenance equipment and construction equipment.
- Skill in operating and using the tools, equipment, and vehicles associated with this work and determining the most effective repair options and procedures.
- Ability to weld and fabricate parts, equipment or reinforcements.
- Ability to read, interpret and apply equipment manuals, electrical drawings/schematics, blueprints and maintenance manuals.
- Ability to monitor and assist operators in the servicing of assigned vehicles.
- Ability to operate trucks, heavy equipment and other vehicles and use the tools associated with highway maintenance.
- Ability to perform building maintenance and HVAC activities within department buildings.
- Ability to maintain a safe working environment.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to follow safety procedures and safety rules required by Dunn County, the department, OSHA & MSHA.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships with department personnel, supervisors and Dunn County personnel.
- Ability to follow Dunn County policies and procedures.
- Ability to manage time effectively, manage multiple projects, and complete work within established deadlines.
- Ability to work the allocated hours of the position, significant overtime, and off hours.
- Must be available for periodic call-ins during emergent situations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Duties of the job involve performing tasks in restricted, confined and difficult work spaces. The work is subject to burns, cuts and sharp objects; and is subject to injuries from moving parts on equipment.
- Duties of the job involve exposure to fumes/exhaust, solvents or hazardous chemicals. The work occasionally involves working in and around high-speed traffic, inclement weather conditions, hot and cold temperatures, noise, dirt and dust.
