Department Overview

We are a major tourist destination located in South East Alaska. KFD responds to 2,800 calls annually. Our minimum staffing is four personnel, 2 staffing an ambulance from station 2, and 2 staffing an engine from station 1. Station twos crew will respond with an engine if it is a fire response station. We respond island-wide, assisting two small volunteer fire departments on our island for major incidents. We offer aggressive protocols and oftentimes handle some unique situations. This is a family orientated fire department that offer growth opportunities and outside training.

Job Requirements

Age: 18
US Citizen: Yes
High School Grad/GED: yes
ValidState Driver’s License: Ability to obtain within 90 days of employment
Ability to Read/Speak English: yes
Hiring Process Application:

• Written exam
• CPAT
• Oral interview
• Psychological and Medical Physical upon conditional offer

Work Schedule

48/96 with multiple overtime opportunities.

Academy

Once hired, you will be sent to Champaign, Illinois, for a 10-week fire academy at Illinois Fire Service Institute. You will be sent to Pelham Training in Indiana for a 17-day EMT course if you are not an EMT.
