Junior Mechanical Engineer
This is technical mechanical engineering work requiring limited experience or practice, but demanding ability to apply principles of physics, mathematics, mechanics and materials to engineering problems and requiring familiarity with methods, materials, equipment and techniques used in the field. A Junior Mechanical Engineer may receive assignments in general terms as far as details are concerned, but the scope of each assignment is limited and methods of procedure are outlined by superiors.
Persons in this position apply specialized engineering skills to system improvement as needed. In addition, they also: assist in the performance of special studies to determine the optimum operating solution of specific problems; consult with senior engineers and engineering consultants to gather facts, exchange information, assist with scheduling construction dates, priorities and coordinating other needs with inter-company construction and contractors to ensure efficient and safe completion of assignments. General direction is provided by the Power Plant Manager.
The person in this position must possess knowledge of the principles of mechanical engineering. They must possess the ability to make moderately difficult technical computations and to compile engineering data. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the job.
The BPU offers a competitive benefit package. The 2026 salary range for this position is between $54,690 to $82,035.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering (or related field) from a regionally accredited/NY State-registered school. OR: Associate Degree in Engineering Science, Math, or Physics + 2 years of full-time paid Mechanical Engineering experience. Equivalent training/experience accepted. (Promotional Qualifications: Four years of permanent competitive class status as an Engineering Technician.)
The position of Junior Mechanical Engineer falls in the Competitive Class of the Civil Service Commission Classification Plan. All applicable rules and regulations of the New York State Civil Service Commission (including all local rules and regulations) shall apply to this position.
