Job Title: Content Strategist – NYC.GOV Redesign
Location: Hybrid – Brooklyn, NY (3 days onsite at 2 MetroTech Center, Brooklyn, NY 11201 / 2 days remote)
Duration: 12 Months
Start Date: July 1, 2026
Schedule: Monday – Friday, 35 hours/week
Pay Rate: Up to $85 to $90/hr
Job Overview
NYC Digital Service is seeking an experienced Content Strategist to support the redesign and enhancement of nyc.gov digital experiences. The ideal candidate will help communicate complex NYC government information in clear, user-friendly language while improving guided digital experiences for New Yorkers.
This role requires expertise in content strategy, information architecture, research, and web copywriting, with a strong understanding of user behavior and digital content management.
The Content Strategist will report directly to the Lead Digital Strategist.
Responsibilities
- Create content requirements and outlines for guided experiences across nyc.gov
- Write compelling, plain-language web copy aligned with the NYC web content style guide
- Interview subject matter experts across NYC government agencies to understand complex topics
- Conduct content audits and maintain inventories of existing website features and functions
- Analyze user behavior and web traffic using Google Analytics
- Research city laws, policies, and government processes
- Deliver high-quality content deliverables within strict deadlines
- Perform quality assurance reviews and provide feedback on content workstreams
- Identify and monitor KPIs related to content performance
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 8 years of experience as a Content Strategist, Editorial Strategist, Information Architect, or similar role
- Strong copywriting and editing skills with a portfolio of work
- Experience writing according to established style guides
- Strong research and analytical skills
- Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder management skills
- Strong project management and organizational abilities
- Basic Google Analytics experience with ability to run traffic reports and support content audits
- Experience leveraging user research to guide content decisions
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Creative Writing, Digital Media, or related field
- Experience working within government, higher education, or nonprofit organizations
- Experience writing in plain language at a sub-7th grade reading level
- Experience using modern content management systems (CMS)
- Familiarity with complex approval workflows involving legal, policy, and executive stakeholders
- Knowledge of NYC government services and understanding of how New Yorkers interact with city agencies
Work Environment
- Hybrid schedule: 3 onsite days per week in Brooklyn, NY and 2 remote days
- Standard business hours, Monday through Friday
- Overtime requires prior approval
