Servant Leader Intern

Position Summary

The Servant Leader Intern is a college-aged young adult or recent graduate who leads a classroom of up to ten scholars in the CDF Freedom Schools summer program. The SLI delivers the Integrated Reading Curriculum, leads Harambee, manages behavior, and maintains a safe, joyful, and culturally affirming learning environment.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Program Implementation & Scholar Support

· Lead a class of up to ten scholars in the Integrated Reading Curriculum and related activities.

· Facilitate or co-facilitate daily Harambee and support enrichment, recreation, arts, and service-learning.

· Build and decorate a creative and welcoming classroom to CDF Freedom School standards

· Provide additional academic and social-emotional support to scholars in partnership with the Program Manager.

 

Behavior, Culture & Family Engagement

· Implement positive, consistent behavior expectations in alignment with site norms.

· Maintain orderly transitions and safe use of classrooms and common spaces.

· Participate in family engagement events and support basic family communication as assigned.

 

Field Trips & Site Activities

· Supervise scholars during field trips and off-site activities, ensuring safety and adherence to expectations.

· Assist with pre-trip preparation and post-trip debriefs.

 

Data, Attendance & Professionalism

· Take accurate daily attendance and promptly report absences or patterns.

· Support collection of assessments, surveys, and other scholar data as directed.

· Attend all required trainings and debriefs; model punctuality, professionalism, and adherence to Springfield Urban League policies.

 

Qualifications

· At least one year of college completed (education, social justice, African American studies, history, or related fields preferred).

· Experience working with children or youth (camp, afterschool, tutoring, mentoring, or similar).

· Strong verbal communication and ability to manage a small group in a structured setting.

· Commitment to Freedom Schools values: literacy, leadership, cultural pride, and social justice.
