Cowell Coffee Shop Kitchen Staff

  • The Cowell Coffee Shop: For the Peoples is a non-transactional student-led cafe designed to increase food access and connect students to Basic Needs resources and the larger campus and community food system.
  • The Coffee Shop collaborates and holds space for the farm and affiliate campus organizations to come together in the CCS to share curriculum, workshops, conversations around food security, interdisciplinary explorations of culinary diasporas, and hands on instruction designed specifically around seasonal produce, preservation, and fermentation.
  • Open M-F from 10-3:30 during the school year, it serves over 172-250 students per day.
  • Throughout the year, the team partners with campus ethnic resource centers to support and spotlight culturally relevant practices through events at the coffee shop and around campus.
  • The site hosts 12-35 interns per quarter
  • Student patrons “swipe in” and data is utilized annually to assess and adjust offerings to broaden and concentrate outreach towards critical student populations.
     

We are looking for students who have a passion for food justice and facilitating access to basic needs! As kitchen staff, you will primarily be stationed in the Cowell Coffee Shop kitchen preparing ingredients for cafe service. This position will involve mentoring and guiding interns and volunteers through lesson plans and skills development surrounding food production for CCS programming.  Staff will work closely with Cowell Coffee Shop Team Members to promote an understanding of the student food system community and connect students to culturally relevant, nutritious, and sustainable food on campus.
 

The job requires a minimum of 12 hours per week, typically spanning 3 shifts. Student workers are required to also work a minimum of 1 event per quarter.

 

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Food Preparation: washing, chopping, sautéing, roasting, pureeing, sauce preparation, dressings, spreads, etc...
  • Intaking and orienting interns and volunteers to basic kitchen tasks and facilitating a safe working environment for students.
  • Cleaning and organizing the kitchen. Washing dishes, mopping, sweeping, wiping down counters, re-organizing refrigerators, cleaning as you go. All CCS workers are expected to spend approximately 25%-35% of their time cleaning.
  • Picking up produce and food recovery items in the electric cart around campus and down at the farm (drivers license preferred for this position)
  • Breaking down boxes, organizing shelves, deep cleaning, scrubbing surfaces, making things shiny!
  • Posting pictures and short videos to social media platforms, helping the student social media lead maintain a healthy stream of content to facilitate online engagement and outreach.

Job Duties

  • 30% - Kitchen duties, stewardship and peer to peer mentorship of on-site interns. Preparation of all food items served during day to day operations at CCS and for CCS collaborations and events.
  • 30% - Cleaning, upkeep and maintenance of Basic Needs sites and equipment
  • 20% - Facilitation, preparation, and execution of BN events and collaborations
  • 10% - Attending meetings, responding to emails and gSuite coordination, basic administrative tasks and inventory
  • 10% - Performing customer service and front of house facing tasks in the CCS and at events.
     

Positions are limited, so we also strongly recommend enrolling in an internship if you would like to be part of the CCS team

Required Qualifications:

  • CA food handlers card
  • Rudimentary culinary skills
  • Chopping
  • Sauteing
  • Ovens
  • Food safety
  • 2+ years experience cooking your own meals
  • Communication skills and strong interest in facilitating teaching and learning spaces
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Dedicated commitment to cleaning and maintaining a kitchen space

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced knowledge of cooking techniques and a wide range of recipes
  • A fundamental understanding of sustainable food systems and seasonal sourcing
  • Ability to weigh, measure, and document recipes
  • Interest in creating and posting social media content about kitchen activities
