External Relations Student Assistant (Neighborhood Housing Office)

Start Date: Monday, January 15th, 2018 or shortly afterwards depending on hiring date

Qualifications: Must be a UWM student and maintain at minimum 2.5 GPA throughout the duration of their employment. Candidates should have experience using the Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft 365. Must have knowledge of UWM off-campus life and/or renting experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Students in their 2nd or 3rd year of school at UWM who are committed to staying in this role for longer than a year are preferred, including summer and winter break (Hours over breaks are negotiable depending on availability of entire team).

Students with a positive attitude, resiliency, and a strong willingness to learn are most desired. Students with prior communication, marketing, event or public relations experience, data tracking and accounting interest, experience with WordPress or email marketing software, professional social media, and prior work in a professional office setting are preferred but not required.  

Position Summary: The External Relations Student Assistant will support the activities of the External Relations Department through the Neighborhood Housing Office. Our team members serve as generalists each with their own leadership area. Some examples include: Social Media, Accounting and Data Tracking, Off-Campus Student Follow-Ups, Programming and Initiatives: Preferred Tenant Program, Panther Neighborhood Watch Pledge, Neighborhood Clean-Ups, Annual Housing Fair, Etc., Website Design, Marketing and Media Production, etc. Leadership areas are determined based on team member interests and career goals.

Essential Duties: Well-qualified candidates will possess excellent written and interpersonal communications skills and have the ability to maintain effective working relationships with other campus departments and external constituents. The position requires the ability to be flexible and have strong communication and organizational skills. Lastly and most importantly the ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality is essential. 

  • Assist with External Relations initiatives, including the Speakers Bureau, Panther Families Association, Neighborhood and Visitor Relations, and other special events

  • Support UWM relationships with area professional sports teams and facilities

  • Participate in planning for and execution of events such as State Fair, UNITE and Fall Welcome, Family Weekend, Homecoming, Annual Housing Fair, Preferred Tenant Program, Dump and Run, Neighborhood Clean-Ups, Make-a-Difference Day, etc.

  • Research and write content for newsletters, websites and promotional pieces for all External Relations programs

  • Manage the Neighborhood Housing Office property listing database, perform checks on prospective landlords, and refer students to legal resources such as the University Legal Clinic 

  • Be knowledgeable on all services and programming available through the Neighborhood Housing Office

  • Present and table during orientation programs and preferred tenant programs

  • Perform neighborhood off-campus house visit follow-ups

  • Provide exceptional customer support for students, landlords, and parents via walk-ins, phone calls, and emails

  • Staff special events and other activities as required These instances are limited.

  • Provide general office support in Neighborhood Housing Office as needed
  • Act as an extension and representative of the University at all times
