Chinese Evangelical Church of San Diego (CEC) is a non-denominational Christian church located at 2585 Judson Street, San Diego, CA 92111. CEC is a multi-congregational church with English, Cantonese, and Mandarin-speaking ministries, united as one church family. CEC is known for its intergenerational, family-oriented approach to ministry - serving different age groups and language preferences while remaining unified in mission, leadership, and vision.

Position Overview

The Student Ministries Pastor is called to shepherd the middle school, high school, and college students of our church. He is to provide Word-saturated, Gospel-centered, servant leadership to all: Youth (6-12 grade), College students, and Advisor teams for both youth and college.  The goal of Student Ministries at CEC is to teach students the whole counsel of God, guiding them to a saving faith in Jesus Christ, helping them grow in faith, character, and mission through both biblical instruction and relational discipleship, enabling them to become resilient followers of Christ. 

 

Qualifications - Spiritual

  • A deep, personal relationship with Jesus Christ evidenced in daily life and exhibiting character qualities consistent with a disciple of Jesus Christ.
  • A love for God’s Word and His Gospel.
  • A Christ-like love for students and their families.
  • A humble, teachable spirit, with a willingness to collaborate with youth and college advisor teams.


Qualifications - Leadership

  • Demonstrates ability to nurture, equip, and lead student leaders and voluntary advisor teams.
  • Cast and implement a vision for student discipleship, in partnership with parents, advisors, and church leadership.
  • The ability to identify, develop, and multiply student leaders to serve and lead in the fellowship.
  • The ability to develop and recruit advisors from within the church body to help serve the students.

 

Requirements

  • Master of Divinity (M.Div.), equivalent, or higher degree from an accredited theological seminary preferred or near completion.
  • A shepherd’s heart and a genuine love for students.
  • Proven experience serving in multicultural and/or multi-congregational settings.
  • Proven experience serving in youth and/or college ministry.
  • Full agreement with CEC’s Statement of Faith and Church Constitution/Bylaws.
  • Must be willing to become a member of CEC
  • Must pass a comprehensive criminal background check and Livescan fingerprint.
  • Fluent in English

 

Responsibilities

A. Preaching and Teaching

  • Regular expositional teaching on Friday Night Fellowships, working through whole books of the Bible.  Occasional topical messages to address needs of students. 
  • Preaching on Sunday mornings to the greater church body on a rotational basis. 
  • Recruit, train, and oversee teachers for Youth and College Sunday school.
  • Equip and support volunteer advisors who teach for Friday Night Fellowship or Sunday School settings.
  • Provide teaching and training to student leaders and advisors during monthly leadership meetings.

B. Leadership and administration

  • Recruit, lead, and provide training for the Youth Cabinet, Youth Advisors, Youth Retreat Committee, College Cabinet, College Retreat Committee, and College Advisor teams.  Effectively communicate with all leadership teams, for the purpose of shepherding and caring for the flock.
  • Lead Student Leadership Trainings every summer before the start of the academic school year.
  • Lead, plan, and attend yearly retreats for Youth and College Students.
  • Communicate regularly with students to inform them of upcoming teaching series and events.
  • Communicate regularly with parents to inform them of what their youth are learning on Fridays and Sundays, and how parents can partner through service and prayer.
  • Oversee the coordination of Friday Night Praise teams with Youth, College, and Aletheia (young adult ministry).
  • Partner with the English Ministry Pastor, Children's Ministry Director, and any other ministries as needed.
  • Partner with parents in discipleship of their children.
  • Provide budget inputs for the annual church budget for Youth Ministry, Youth Retreat, College Ministry, and College Retreat.
  • Collaborate with other pastors and congregational ministries to support Youth Sunday and lead the youth in serving at various church events throughout the year.
  • Meet once a month to plan Joint Praise Nights with other local Youth Pastors from Chinese Heritage Churches and/or other churches.

C. Pastoral care and support

  • Provide spiritual guidance, counseling, and support to students and parents.
  • Lead and facilitate Youth Parent Meetings one to two times a year to partner and pray with Youth Parents. 
  • Meet with parents individually, as needed, to better understand how to love, support, and care for them and their youth.
  • Pray daily for the students, parents, student leaders, and advisor teams.
  • Oversee discipleship of students in a one-on-one mentoring model, by advisors or via the Student Ministries Pastor, himself, on a regular basis (weekly or bi-monthly).

D. Outreach and community engagement

  • Inspire and model a commitment to sharing the gospel with the local community and supporting missions efforts locally and globally.
  • Encourage students to go on cross-cultural missions trips with CEC.
  • Train and encourage students to share the gospel on their school campuses.  Encourage youth to pray for and invite non-Christian friends to Bring-a-Friend Nights, which occur once a quarter.
  • Develop a strategy for and reach out to local college campuses with the intent to develop a vibrant college ministry.

 

Compensation and Benefits

The Student Ministries Pastor is a salaried, full-time, exempt, at-will position with the call subjected to the approval of CEC membership upon the recommendation of the Elder Council. CEC offers comprehensive benefits for full-time employees. This includes medical, dental, and vision insurance (including health care coverage for spouse and dependents), disability & life insurance, 403(b) retirement plan, paid legal holidays, accrual-based vacation, sick leave, and sabbatical opportunities, consistent with its staff policies.

The salary range for the position of Student Ministries Pastor is $70,304 - $88,000.
