As an Adjustment Specialist at the Alabama School for the Blind (ASB), you will play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between academic learning and personal growth. Working in close coordination with our Student Life team, you will empower students to navigate their world with confidence, independence, and skill.
HOW YOU’LL MAKE AN IMPACT
You will empower students by collaborating directly with Student Life to enrich the daily experiences of our students, helping them develop the social and emotional tools needed for success. To best serve students, you will adapt your approach to the unique needs of each individual, ensuring every student feels supported and seen. You will have the opportunity daily to partner with dedicated colleagues to maintain a world-class educational environment that prioritizes accessibility and achievement.
BASIC QUALIFICATION:
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Services, Social Work, Psychology, Special Education, or human service field
- Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- CDL Driver’s License upon employment.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Student Advocacy & Support: Serve as a dedicated advocate for the rights and needs of students and their families.
- Educational Programming: Develop and facilitate age-appropriate dormitory programs focused on life skills, social-emotional development, and peer mentoring (e.g., Big Brothers/Big Sisters).
- Behavioral Intervention: Collaborate with counselors and directors to develop behavior management plans for students with chronic needs. Assist in supervising Student Code of Conduct consequences and behavior intervention goals. Lead investigations into serious behavioral incidents and complete detailed reports.
- Liaison & Collaboration: Act as the primary bridge between Student Life and Academic Departments. Coordinate with external public and private agencies, including the Social Security Office, DHR, Juvenile Probation, and the Health Department.
- Consultation & Outreach: Maintain regular communication with parents, counselors, and residence staff regarding student progress and concerns. Conduct home and off-site visits as necessary to support student success.
- Staff Resources: Provide dormitory staff with educational materials and resources to enhance student engagement.
- Special Programming: Coordinate specialized workshops on topics such as harassment prevention, personal safety, diversity, and healthy relationships. Manage the annual Christmas Sponsorship Program.
- Logistics & Administration: Arrange student transportation services and maintain meticulous records of behavioral incidents and student progress.
- Flexible Schedule: Ability to work a flexible schedule, including days, evenings, and weekends, to meet student needs.
- Communication Skills: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and professionally
Professional Development & Certifications
- Braille Proficiency: Must achieve a score of 80% or higher on the AIDB Braille Skills Assessment Inventory within the first 24 months of employment.
- Behavior Management Certification: Must become a certified instructor for the AIDB behavior management training program within 12 months of hire to train fellow staff members.
- Foundations of Visual Impairment: Completion of the Foundations of Visual Impairment E-learning course within the first 12 months of employment.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Maintain a working knowledge of Title IX regulations and compliance.

This is an exempt position, and is not subject to overtime or compensatory provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
