Director of Children’s Ministries

First United Methodist Church, Bloomington, Indiana
Reports to: Associate Pastor 
Status: Full-time (40 hours/week, exempt)
Salary: $44,000–$46,000 plus health benefits (pension match after a year)

Position Summary
The director of children’s ministries will:

  • Lead a compassionate, Christ-centered children’s ministry (birth–6th grade) in a progressive, medium-sized Reconciling UMC in a university town with diverse families, including East African refugees and LGBTQIA+. 
  • Collaborate with staff/volunteers to nurture faith formation, create safe spaces, equip parents, and foster intergenerational discipleship. 
  • Advance FUMCB’s mission of making disciples of Christ through justice, outreach, and radical hospitality for all backgrounds.

Vision: We are a Christ-centered church that is open to all, a safe place to grow, and a servant community.  We want children to thrive spiritually in an intergenerational environment of holistic nurture. We blend age-specific events (VBS, Bible Sundays) with church-wide worship/service (Christmas Eve, Mardi Gras, chili cook-off).

Shape young disciples (0–12) who:

  • Experience God’s love in safe, inclusive environments.
  • Grow through worship, study, service, and family faith practices.
  • Engage diverse cultures (East Africa, multilingual, & LGBTQIA+ families) via welcoming programs.

Key Responsibilities
Programming: Develop Sunday School (curriculum/volunteers), VBS, family events, liturgy boxes; monitor attendance/follow-up.
Leadership: Build lay teams for vision/planning; recruit/train volunteers via Safe Sanctuaries (background checks); manage nursery staff.
Outreach/Engagement: Support East African families in transition; equip parents via email/events; integrate children congregation-wide.
Administration: Maintain registrations/records; manage budget; lead team meetings; communicate with families; other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Vibrant Christian faith
  • UMC knowledge; inclusive theology welcoming all families/orientations.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field;
  •  5+ years children/family ministry leadership.
  • Cross-cultural/multilingual experience; passion for diverse children/families.
  • Strong organizational/team skills; effective communicator; Sunday availability.
  • Background check required.
