Front of House Assistant

Circus Flora | Federal Work Study — Community Service

Term: May 18 – June 24, 2026 (with some flexibility on start date)

Hours: Approximately 30 hours/week

Location: Circus Flora Big Top, Grand Center, St. Louis, MO

Reports to: Artistic and Executive Director

 

About Circus Flora

Circus Flora is a St. Louis nonprofit producing critically acclaimed contemporary one-ring circus performances under our Big Top in Grand Center. Each season pairs world-class circus arts with ensemble storytelling, training programs for young performers, and broad community access through free and reduced-price ticket programs. Our 2026 season, Flying High, runs June 4 – 21 at the Big Top.

 

Position Summary

The Front of House Assistant supports the welcome, comfort, and overall guest experience for the thousands of patrons who attend Circus Flora performances each season. This role plays a central part in delivering on Circus Flora’s commitment to making the circus accessible and joyful for every audience member — including school groups, community-service partners, families attending through our discounted-ticket programs, and our season subscribers and donors.

 

Key Responsibilities

• Staff the will-call and box office windows; greet patrons and resolve ticketing questions in a calm, friendly manner

• Scan tickets at venue entry and assist with patron flow into and out of the Big Top

• Orient first-time guests, families, and community groups to the venue and amenities

• Support our community-access programs by coordinating arrival logistics for school and nonprofit partner groups attending on free or reduced tickets

• Assist the VIP Tent and donor hospitality team with set-up, guest check-in, and clean-up before and after performances

• Field general patron inquiries by phone and email during box office hours

• Provide light administrative support to the season operations team (data entry, mailings, supply runs) as needed

• Other duties as assigned to help our small team deliver an excellent season

Qualifications

• Reliable, punctual, and professional in front of the public

• Strong customer service and interpersonal skills

• Comfortable working in a fast-paced live event environment

• Detail-oriented and well-organized

• Able to stand for extended periods and lift up to 25 pounds

• Evening and weekend availability required — the work week runs Tuesday through Sunday, with afternoon and evening performances and pre-show preparation

• Interest in the performing arts, nonprofit work, or community engagement is a plus

 

Schedule

Approximately 30 hours per week, May 18 – June 24, 2026. The work week runs Tuesday through Sunday, tracking our preparation and performance schedule — daytime hours earlier in the week for box office prep and group sales coordination, and primarily afternoons and evenings on performance days. We can offer some flexibility on the start date to accommodate FWS award timing.

 

Community Service Component

Circus Flora’s mission is to bring the live performing arts to every corner of St. Louis. Each season we welcome thousands of guests who attend at no or reduced cost through partnerships with St. Louis Public Schools, social-service organizations, and our annual community Free Day. The Front of House Assistant is a direct point of contact for many of these guests and is essential to delivering an inclusive, welcoming experience for them.

 

Compensation

Per the SLU Federal Work Study rate schedule.
