Director of Marketing Communications

SUMMARY

 

The Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for the development and implementation of the College’s marketing strategies, communications, and public relations for both internal and external audiences. This position operates as the official college spokesperson with the media. The director manages the Marketing Office, overseeing graphic design and social media as it directly supports the College’s marketing, enrollment, community relations, communications, and public relations goals. This position also serves on the President’s Council and reports to the President.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serves as the college’s Public Information Officer, maintaining effective relations with the print and media that lead to public awareness of the College’s many contributions to the community.
  • Responds to media inquiries with timely, accurate, and appropriate information to enhance the college’s reputation, and favorably reflects the work of James Sprunt Community College, and our students, faculty, and staff.
  • Directs the processes of preparing and distributing news releases and generating media coverage of college events and programs.
  • Responsible for developing, researching, writing and disseminating communications for a variety of news and public relations efforts including media releases, blogging, newsletters, magazine feature stories, social media posts, VNR (video news release) voiceovers, and website content for James Sprunt Community College and its programs.
  • Formulates marketing and communication strategies aimed toward student populations, current students, and other targeted community-related populations.
  • Manages the creative development of advertisements and collateral marketing materials that help fulfill the College's enrollment goals.
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive communications plan to include development and delivery of information to both internal and external audiences.
  • Develops and protects James Sprunt Community College's brand and image ensuring that all college communications reflect the vision, values, and mission of the College.
  • Directs the development of assigned creative work, in keeping with the College's marketing plan and objectives including alignment of said creative work with the intent of the College's strategic goals, brand and image.
  • Conceptualizes, writes, edits and oversees the production of marketing materials and advertising with an emphasis on high quality and unified branding.
  • Oversees the maintenance of active social media accounts for James Sprunt Community College to disseminate information and support student enrollment.
  • Collaborates with the web design/development team to develop, maintain, revise and update the College's web presence.
  • Develop short- and long-term plans and budgets for the College's marketing/communications/public relations program and its activities, monitor progress, assure adherence and evaluate performance.
  • Oversees the event planning function of the Marketing Office and the College.
  • Plans and manages press events such as articulation agreement signings, tours and donation announcements.
  • Oversees the graphic design function of the Marketing Office and the College, as well as coordinates with graphic designer to manage projects such as brochures, posters, banners, signs, bookmarks and more for departments across campus.
  • Meets with the President’s Council, department and/or program chairs to plan effective marketing and recruiting strategies for each semester.
  • Research, conduct interviews, and write engaging content promoting JSCC programs, services, students, faculty, staff, and alumni for printed and online media.
  • Photograph JSCC events and programs and ensure diversity and inclusion in all photo usage
  • Maintain all social media accounts to engage with students and potential students in a respectful, informative way.
  • Solely responsible for the layout of content and production of JSCC newsletter.
  • Maintain brand integrity across all public-facing signage.  
  • Maintain knowledge of graphic design processes and adherence to brand standards.
  • Solely responsible for the design and ordering of all business cards for the institution
  • Acquire computer/technology competencies as appropriate to the position.
  • Maintain security of personal computer access.
  • Perform other professional or job-related duties as assigned.
  • Serve on college committees as directed by supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned.


 

 

QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Experience, Skills, and Abilities

 

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Applies knowledge of public relations and marketing; sales strategies and trends, production practices, consumer preferences, product promotion activities, and economic development and public/media relations principles and practices.
  • Frequently provides friendly customer service and assistance to employees, media, students, and/or intra-agency and external information exchange.
  • Ability to independently research and write creatively and accurately for a variety of audiences (print media, publications, website, social media, etc.).
  • Ability to develop and maintain the JSCC website, as well as proficiency in using social media channels to promote the college.
  • Ability to use digital photography and video as needed in publicity.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including familiarity with Associated Press style.
  • Ability to understand and complete the procurement process via state-prescribed processes.
  • Exercises independent judgment and decision-making in determining public relations and marketing strategies that promote agency mission and objectives.
  • Represent the agency on sensitive issues and to the media.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the requisite knowledge, skill and abilities.


 

REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Skills

Required: Master’s degree from an accredited institution in marketing, communications, public relations, or related field. 

 

Preferred:  Some supervisory experience. Progressive leadership responsibilities and experience managing communication and/or marketing in higher education environment. 

 

Experience

Required:  Excellent communication skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office, photo editing and graphic design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Adobe InDesign, and other pertinent social media management tools. Experience in education, marketing, advertising, public relations, recruiting, or journalistic work in an educational, corporate or college environment. 

 

Preferred:  Experience in a higher education setting, Understanding and commitment to the community college mission and philosophy.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit.   The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to focus.  May require travel.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in indoor conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
